Picture of Georgina Wilson-Powell
Updated: 17 May 2017
Summer menus are being drawn up, gin-inspired gardens are ready to go and Londoners and itching to get their pale skin out slightly nearer the sun on a variety of rooftops all over town. Most of these are open in the following months; some revamped, others staying as we love them. Cocktails at the ready, here are our favourite rooftop bars in London for summer.

The Fellow

Kings Cross pub The Fellow has had a big refurb and now serves craft brews from local London breweries and cocktails. With its new look comes a heated roof terrace with lots of seating, string lights and lovely soft cushions to curl up on.

Bird of Smithfield

After something a little more secret? It’s easy to miss the rooftop terrace at Bird of Smithfield with fab views of Clerkenwell and Smithfields market. This year there’s an entire menu dedicated to the Spritz. This wonderful terrace opens 8 May.

SkyLounge is perfect for an after work drink to watch the sun set overlooking the city of London – from its roof you can see the historic Tower of London and Tower Bridge as well as The Shard. The bar has just launched a brunch menu and a summer cocktail menu, and if that wasn’t enough they’ll be partnering with Havana Rum later this summer.

Frank’s Café

Everyone in south London knows this summer rooftop institution. Frank’s Café is on top of a car park in Peckham. In addition to great drinks, Franks has a superb menu of fresh summer classics and daily changing menu. Frank’s Café opens to the masses on 19 May.

The Roof Deck at Selfridges

If it’s summer it means the Selfridges Roof Deck is back. This year the theme is inspired by California living – bringing the American west coast to central London. Escape the Oxford Street crowds and hide up here with cocktails like the cucumber and chilli margarita (a blend of tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, cucumber, Habanero chilli and chilli salt) or the watermelon martini (vodka, fresh watermelon juice and homemade syrup).

Dalston Roof Park

Dalston’s long standing roof park is a mix of craft beers and cocktails, open air cinema nights, afternoon DJ shindigs and plenty of events supporting local creative folk and the Bootstrap charity. The roof park has undergone a major renovation for 2017 and features two bars, in-house catering, and a new retractable roof to protect from English weather. The bar is open Tuesday through to Sunday, check the site as opening times vary and they may have private bookings.

Canary Wharf is stepping up to the rooftop bar plate with new bar, restaurant and terrace, Bōkan. From the 39th floor terrace you can survey all that London has to offer with spectacular views. The bar has a DJ from Thursday to Saturdays, and will stay open until 2am.

Loft at Alexandra

It’s not all about East London. Down South in Wimbledon there’s one of the best hidden away al fresco terraces, the Loft at Alexandra. Pop by and take up residence in a wooden booth under the fairy lights or drop in after work when there’s a popcorn machine on the, craft burger patties frying and dirty fries to dig into.

Vista at Trafalgar Hotel has partnered with Bloom Gin this year to bring an English country garden to London but with views over Trafalgar Square. There is a door charge though which can put some punters off. Best to round up six mates and book a table.

Last year the summer pop up roof terrace called Roofnic on Oxford Street delivered us affordable cocktails, negronis in cans and some of the best elevated people-watching in central London. We can’t wait to see what they have in store this year.

Big Chill House

It’s been around for over a decade but this multi-level bar and restaurant near Kings Cross still rocks the roof every summer with its craft beer, garden shed style rooftop bar where you can order up pub grub and bottles of bubbly.

Boundary Rooftop

The hardy people at Boundary are open all year round and there’s plenty of blankets and heaters on hand should the summer not materialise. Gaze over Shoreditch (you’re above the Albion cafe here), with a full on lemon grove on the roof. There’s an all day Mediterranean-inspired menu, as well as hot and cold cocktails.
