The most famous of the Royal Navy’s warships, HMS Victory in the port city of Portsmouth attracts plenty of visitors. If you’re planning to join them, we’re sure one of our favourite hotels nearby will float your boat – and they’re bookable with Culture Trip.

With a history strongly linked to nautical life and the Royal Navy, Portsmouth has plenty of attractions that tell a naval story – like HMS Victory, located at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. As a major destination in Hampshire, Portsmouth has plenty of accommodation options, from ones that give a nod to its maritime roots to fresh, boutique takes – here’s our pick of the best for your visit.

1. Keppel’s Head Hotel

Located right by Portsmouth Harbour, HMS Victory can be reached on foot in five minutes from this hotel. It’s right by several other maritime attractions, and the hotel itself is heavily influenced by past admirals and other naval figures. You could think yourself on an actual ship in the Captain’s Head Restaurant, given its seafaring decor and menu style.

2. Queen’s Hotel

Right by Southsea Common and a five-minute drive from HMS Victory, some of the rooms at this hotel come with views out to sea. It was once a large private house, but now offers guests a variety of room types to choose from. It’s all about hospitality in the bar and restaurant here – the style at Restaurant 1865 is relaxed fine dining, decked out with high ceilings, chandeliers and plush furniture. Dukes Bar, meanwhile, serves up cocktails that are fruitier interpretations of classics.

4. Florence Gardens Boutique Hotel

Quite literally a stone’s throw from Somerset House Boutique Hotel, this property is also part of the group of boutique hotels run by Mercer Collection. As well as enjoying the same proximity to attractions in Portsmouth, similar room styles and in-room spa services, it also shares the Garden Restaurant with its sister hotel, burrowed among the trees in a courtyard setting. Breakfast here, however, is a more stripped down service of pastries, cereals and coffee, with additional cooked breakfast options.

5. Becketts Southsea

Encompassing two Grade II-listed buildings, this small boutique is made up of just six rooms, spread out across four floors. Wooden walls are a heavy feature here, with a lot of handmade decor and furniture. And while the rooms are all unique, it’s the dining areas where Becketts excels: there’s several options – some of which can be privately hired – and two bars, plus a head chef that took most of his inspiration from working at the infamous Noma.

6. Best Western Royal Beach Hotel

Right by the South Parade Pier on Southsea Beach, this large hotel has a sea view lounge and interior with nods to seafaring memorabilia. The hotel was built in 1866 and has a period feel to it, with decor that could be from a different time. There’s 68 rooms to accommodate guests – and with options for weddings, Christmas and conferences, it’s particularly catered to functions.

7. The Florence Suite Boutique Hotel

Another member of the Mercer Collection, this one is close to Somerset House and Florence Gardens hotels, sharing the same services – like in-room spa treatments – and proximity to local attractions. As an annex to Florence House Hotel, it shares the Garden Restaurant with the other two. The annex hotel is dog-friendly and serves up an à la carte breakfast menu with in-room dining available.

8. Stattons Boutique Hotel

There’s 12 bedrooms in this boutique, restored Edwardian building. Yet another member of the Mercer Collection, it offers in-room spa treatments, access to the Garden Restaurant and walking distance to the beach, Southsea Common and just 10 minutes from Southsea Castle. It’s a pleasant 2mi walk from here to HMS Victory. Some of the rooms here allow pets, with all being bright, fairly modern and airy.
