One of Dorset’s best-known – and best-loved – seaside towns, Weymouth is the business for a beachy break. With proximity to the absurdly photogenic Jurassic Coast, it’s a welcoming place, where domestic Georgian architecture rubs shoulders with golden sands, yachts with pleasure boats and caravans with characterful pubs, hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. A super-convenient 50m (165ft) from the beach, this friendly grade II-listed Victorian townhouse is also handy for the Old Harbour and town centre. It’s run by a local couple, Karen and Martin, hence the care and attention given to the excellent full English breakfasts featuring local produce. The five cosy rooms, in 50 shades of rich brown, nod to the coastal setting with driftwood on the walls. Ask if you need a triple. Four have en-suite showers, one an external bathroom. Be sure to pay homage to the landmark limestone arch of Durdle Door on a day trip.

Jaunty polka-dot walls and beige colour schemes give suave character to these seven rooms. There are family-compatible spaces (one room has a bunk), a two-bedroom caravan and sea-view doubles – ask for number 14, with its own balcony, for breezy morning coffees. Choose either room-only or (our advice) B&B: you’ll be good to go after filling up on locally sourced bacon and eggs or freshly baked croissants, pains au chocolat and fruit. The hotel is right on the Esplanade, so you’re close to everything that makes Weymouth great: beach, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Spread over three floors, rooms at this family-run redbrick townhouse all have photo-worthy views of Weymouth harbour or the beach – pick room four for a fine outlook over multi-coloured Georgian houses huddled by the waterfront. Ask Richard and Sam, the friendly, helpful hosts, for pointers on where to head once you’ve had breakfast. Our top tip: both Weymouth Museum and the Weymouth to Portland Railway walk are close by and well worth getting stuck into.

Anyone who’s partial to scampi in a basket and a pint in a lively beer garden will be content at this traditional red-tile-roofed pub in the former fishing village of Chickerell, just outside Weymouth. With hints of light blue, rooms (some wheelchair-accessible) are soothing; three of the 14 have relaxing spa baths. Downstairs, the cosy flagstone-floored pub exudes an upbeat party spirit, against a backdrop of rugged walls, well-scrubbed wooden tables and low ceilings. If that sounds like your scene, earmark a Friday, when there are live acoustic sessions.

Overlooking Weymouth’s picturesque 17th-century harbour and bay, the family-run Anchorage gets full marks for views. Guests love it for its proximity to the beach – a few sandy footsteps away. Room decor is simple but appealing – here a floral pattern, there a wicker chair in which to curl up with your holiday novel. Kids are in clover – the Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park is conveniently close by. Best of all, the light-filled breakfast room overlooks the seafront so you can debate which sandy spot to descend upon one you’ve devoured your delicious full English – vegetarians fully catered for.
