Famous for its elegant Georgian architecture and historic Roman Baths, it’s fair to say Bath isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you think of when it comes to buzzing nightlife. But this compact city has plenty to offer, whether you’re into fun, cheesy student nights or sophisticated cocktails.

Widely regarded as Bath’s favourite cocktail bar, Sub 13 is cool venue attracting a stylish crowd. The passionate and talented mixologists can whip up a seriously impressive list of cocktails in the vaults, or if champagne is more your thing, you can chill out in the Perrier-Jouët Champagne Terrace – a gorgeous al-fresco space that oozes style.

Second Bridge

If you’re looking for somewhere to dance the night away with a friendly and up-for-it crowd, give Second Bridge a try. The club has two rooms playing different types of music, as well as plenty of bars, a VIP area and an outdoor, heated terrace. With different theme nights each week, including the Monday night student night and Pure Bridge on Saturdays, playing RnB and Hip Hop, there’s something to please all musical tastes.

Tucked down an alley next to Pulteney Bridge, Opium is well worth seeking out. This hip bar describes itself as Bath’s best known secret and has its own distinct character. The interiors are a mixture of styles – everything from Victoriana to Renaissance – and the effect is enticingly decadent. If you’re feeling flush, you can even book the ‘secret room’ with its own entrance, private bar and big-screen karaoke.

This subterranean nightclub is a hugely popular live music venue, attracting an impressive line-up of new and established bands. Moles also plays host to some of Bath’s best themed nights, including Tuesday’s The Big Cheese (all the pop classics you could hope for) and Thursday’s Stereo, playing fantastic rock and indie tunes. It’s a popular student haunt, but also much-loved by Bath locals. Fun night out, guaranteed.

Gin lovers, you’re in for a treat! This quirky bar, right in the heart of Bath’s city centre, has more than 200 different gins on offer, including Bath Gin (featuring a winking Jane Austen on the bottle), which is distilled in the cellars on site. The mixologists here really know what they’re talking about, so put yourself in their capable hands and try one of the incredible gin cocktails on the menu.

Po Na Na

A favourite with the student crowd, Po Na Na is the place to head for late night dancing, without a hefty price tag. With regular drink deals, various themed nights and a proper party atmosphere, this Moroccan-inspired hangout is always packed – but if you can put up with the queue for the bar it’s worth it for a great night.
