The competition for retailers to stand out during the festive season is fierce. Enter the Christmas advert. Tugging at heartstrings, evoking nostalgia, and teasing smiles out of would-be customers, British department store John Lewis has been at the forefront of the frenzy since their 2011 plot twist in The Long Wait.

Anticipation for the retailer’s seasonal offering reached fever pitch last week, when a school boy’s coursework fooled thousands into believing it was the real deal. But while student Nick Jablonka’s Snowglobe cost ‘a couple of snacks and a couple of drinks’, John Lewis’ budget is reportedly millions.

To evoke those classically Christmassy feelings of nostalgia, we’ve put together the best seasonal TV adverts since they became a thing. From that rhythmic whisper of ‘Holidays are coming, holidays are coming…’ to that kiss under the mistletoe that wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the Yellow Pages, you have to be a Scrooge to feel nothing after watching these.
