What’s On In Istanbul In September

With the August heat a thing of the past, Istanbul is slowly getting ready for a new season of events. Make sure you’ve been to all the good gallery exhibitions before they draw to a close in September and make sure to get your tickets soon for the upcoming concerts.

ART | Rising… a small height from the ground

The last three days to see this unique project by artist Hera Büyüktaşçıyan set within an active archeological site currently uncovering the remains of the Patriarchal Monastery of Satyros. The artist has placed a ‘creature’ in the remains, which is to remind its audience of all that is forgotten and must be remembered.

Turkish artist Emre Namyeter displays his abstract painting composed of wooden panels and his self-produced paint in this solo-exhibition. Throught the use of various pouring techniques, Namyeter’s works become multi-layered swirls of color that represent both his physical movevent and the state of his mind.

ART | MACK: Just Light and Colour

History | Byzantium’s Other Empire: Trebizond

Explore the monuments and remains of the ancient empire of Trebizond, which has largely been forgotten. With its capital in modern day Trabzon in the Black Sea region, the exhibition displays the photography and drawing archives of David and June Winfield who worked to restore the 13th century Hagia Sophia in Trabzon in 1959-63.

Since its establishment this classic Turkish dance company has toured more than 98 countries to bring their astounding Anatolian dances mixed with modern dance and ballet. The Fire of Anatolia also holds two Guinness records, one for fastest dance performance (with 241 steps per minute) and one for largest audience (400,000 during a performance in Ereğil, Turkey). This performance takes places in Bursa, which is only a short ferry ride away from Istanbul.

DANCE | Istanbul Dervishes
