Amsterdam’s bar scene has been dominated by trendy speakeasy style bars, and some of them are quite good, but being hidden doesn’t necessarily equate to a good bar. We’ve reviewed a few of these speakeasies, as well as a few bars that have this wild convention of just letting people in. Whether you have to have a secret code or a collared shirt, these bars serve the best cocktails in Amsterdam.

door 74

door 74 is chic, sophisticated, and fun. Head here for a romantic evening or after dinner drinks. The cocktails are wild – some come flaming and others need to be shared. If you are traveling with a large group, look into taking a cocktail workshop. The bartenders at door 74 will sit down with your group and teach everyone how to make the cocktails that have made door 74 so famous.

Hiding In Plain Sight

Hiding in Plain Sight is a standard craft cocktail bar minus the stuffy atmosphere and haughty attitude. The cocktails are pricey but they are very creative and the alcohol content is high. Try the Creme Brûlée, a dessert cocktail that is torched on top to create a crispy sugar crust.

Vesper Bar

Vesper Bar has a license to thrill and they use it liberally; this James Bond themed bar is decked out with 007 memorabilia and serves up killer craft cocktails. Vesper pours the classic ‘shaken, not stirred’ martini, but if you aren’t up to a bowl of loudmouth soup Vesper Bar has several other unique cocktails. If you’re really feeling adventurous, just tell the bartender a few of your favorite flavors and he or she will fashion a cocktail to your liking.

Henry’s Bar

The folks at Henry’s Bar chose the right author to name a bar after. Henry’s Bar is a craft cocktail bar dedicated to Charles Bukowski, celebrated author and alcoholic, and each cocktail is prefaced by a Bukowski quote. We recommend the Nude Pornstar: Ketel One Vodka, Vanilla Syrup, Fresh Passionfruit, and Champagne. Henry’s also makes huge shareable cocktails, but if you’re anything like Bukowski, you’ll drink one all by yourself.

Bar Oldenhof

Though many bars in Amsterdam claim to be Prohibition-era style speakeasies, Bar Oldenhof feels the most ‘old-world.’ Oldenhof is often described as jazzy and mysterious, but it isn’t intimidating at all. The servers are very nice and will make you a huge gin and tonic or help you select the perfect whisky, of which they have many. Enjoy a cigar in the upstairs lounge if you like.

Tales & Spirits

Tales & Spirits is the most whimsical bar in Amsterdam. Their specialty cocktail is the ‘What if…’ and it’s the most unique cocktail you’ll be able to order anywhere. Essentially, you give the bartender a few suggestions and he or she creates a drink tailored to your taste. If you aren’t feeling creative, then take a look at the other drinks on the menu, featuring ingredients like green apple elixir and Sicilian mobster syrup.
