Famous for its wind-powered water sports, golden beaches and year-round sun it may be, but Fuerteventura doesn’t usually top any list of romantic destinations. Look hard enough, though, and you can find places to stay around this second-largest of the Canary Islands that are perfect for a couple’s getaway, and we’ve done the searching for you with this selection of most romantic hotels on the island.

Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahia Real

More than a little reminiscent of a Moorish palace, the five-star Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahia Real is quite probably Fuerteventura’s top luxury-level property and is a perfect pick for a romantic treat. At 242 guest rooms, it’s far from an intimate boutique property, though a deluxe spa, five restaurants and a chilled-out beach club make excellent use of the space.  Fringed by the white sand beaches and dunes of Corralejo Natural Dune Park, the setting is also magical.

VIK Suite Hotel Risco del Gato

Couples looking for something a little different from the norm will love the VIK Suite Hotel Risco del Gato. The complex comprises quirky and innovative architecture set in an extensive cactus garden, with accommodation taking the form of semi-cylindrical pods. Each of the the fun, super-cosy pods has a whirlpool bath plus a secluded terrace with sun loungers. For extra ‘romance’, pick the Suite Margarita Bonita, which includes a remote-controlled rocking bed, adjustable mood lighting and a curvy sofa especially designed to ‘facilitate intimate relationships’.

H10 Ocean Dreams Boutique Hotel

Opened in 2016, this adults-only hotel has a boutique-style atmosphere conducive to a romantic break. No shortage of Bali beds around the pool means couples can luxuriate in comfort, with the option of a bottle of chilled champagne to really set the mood. The chain’s signature Despacio Thalasso Centre offers a range of hydrotherapy treatments, plus couples’ massages, while the restaurant offers an open-air terrace for romantic alfresco dinners for two.

Mahoh Hotel

Taking its name from Fuerteventura’s aboriginal name, meaning ‘my land’, Hotel Rural Mahol is the first rural hotel on the north end of Fuerteventura, and a lovely rustic bolthole for couples looking to get away from its all. This typical old Canarian country-style house dates back to the 19th century, and is built from a mix of local timber and volcanic rock. The nine rooms are characterful and quaint, with chunky wooden furniture and exposed stone walls, while facilities include a 1,000-book library and an outdoor pool. Its restaurant is particularly outstanding, serving delicious meals made from island recipes using locally sourced ingredients.

Bahiazul Villas & Club

With its crisp whitewashed curves and topped with azure cupolas, the Bahiazul Villas complex is certainly more than a little reminiscent of a Greek island village. There’s very little in the way of shared facilities, but each luxury villa has its own pool and Jacuzzi, and you can even pay to have your private pool heated in advance. Each villa also features a spacious rooftop terrace with four-poster Bali bed, great for snugging in the sun with your other half; there’s even space for dining, though you might have to provide your own candles.

Occidental Jandia Royal Level

Couples looking to splurge on a luxury-level, child-free experience could do a lot worse than a stay at the Occidental Jandia Royal Level.  Top-notch facilities include five pools (two of which are heated) surrounded by an abundance of Bali beds with plenty of room for two – plus chilled fizz delivered on request. High-end accommodation includes romantic ocean-view terraces, while suites add the perk of hydromassage tubs perfect for soaking á deux.

Barceló Corralejo Bay

Another high-end option from the upscale Barceló chain, this adults-only hotel is short stroll from buzzing Corralejo’s sandy coastline. The laid-back, kid-free atmosphere is ideal for couples, with plenty of facilities to entertain and space to just relax. All rooms extend to terraces or balconies, with top-level accommodation offering alfresco soaking opportunities. Dining is also top notch, with a 150-item breakfast that includes chilled Cava and freshly squeezed orange juice. If that’s not all relaxing enough, couples massages are available in the hotel spa.
