The Basque city of Bilbao is probably not the first city you’d think of for a spa break, but if you’re here for the city’s art, culture and culinary heritage, and find yourself with some time to relax and unwind, head to one of these top-notch spas.
Located inside the Mercure Hotel Jardines de Albia, the Spa Jardines de Albia is one of the best in the city. It offers a peaceful escape from the busy urban environment, where visitors can indulge in hydrotherapy, chromotherapy, aromatherapy and a range of other blissful treatments. Begin with the Albia Circuit – a one-and-a-half hour session in the steam zone, the thermal zone and the relax zone, followed by a revitalising drink in the tea zone. The spa also offers a range of massages, beauty treatments and therapies.
Okane Spa, situated right next to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, offers reflexology, shiatsu, hot stone massages, and a wide range of Oriental massages, from Thai to Balinese. The spa also specialises in acupuncture, and offers a very special coffee massage with exfoliating coffee beans.
S’Thai Bilbao is based on ancient Far Eastern medicine and traditions. All of the spa’s therapists were trained in South East Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, and carry out authentic Eastern treatments. A fusion of a wellness centre and an art gallery, the spa is filled with works of art from the Orient – stone Buddhas, paintings and intricate wood carvings. Massages offered include Balinese, Thai, shiatsu and reflexology. Special treatments include bamboo cane massage and Tibetan chi massage.
An active centre located in the heart of the city, Hydra offers a spa plus fitness classes including yoga, Zumba, pilates and meditation. In the relaxing spa area itself, visitors will find a warming sauna, a steam bath, a jacuzzi, foot baths and Vichy showers.
Situated just south of the Casco Viejo (Old Town), Bilbao’s Metropolitan Spa Begoña is home to a vast spa area filled with hydromassage pools, water beds, bubble banks, swan-neck fountains, jets and thermal showers. There are also jacuzzis, Turkish baths and sauna, a solarium, relax zone, ice fountain and swimming pool. As well as a gym and classes, the centre has a beauty area for massages and facials, as well as manicures and pedicures.
