The student area of Malasaña is home to hip coffee houses and vintage shops, whilst neighbouring Chueca has made its name as the LGBTQ district of Madrid. Book one of these hostels for an affordable stay in this section of Spain‘s capital city.

Malasaña and Chueca are a heady combination of buzzing Madrid’s student and LGBTQ neighbourhoods. Expect historic squares lined with lively bars, vintage stores brimming with hidden gems and an open-air cinema playing old classics. Whether you choose sharing or a private room, or even a group apartment, you’re sure to make some new amigos in this bright and friendly hostel. Right in the heart of the city, a few minutes from the Gran Vía, Plaza de España and the Royal Palace, it’s the ideal location if you want to discover Madrid on foot. Feeling weary? 2. CC Malasaña

CC Malasaña ticks a lot of boxes. The bright, contemporary rooms (both singles and doubles) feature minimalist furnishings and private bathrooms, as well as flat-screen TVs and desks. Some upgraded rooms even feature a balcony. While there are no shared dorms, you’ll be surprised at how reasonable the room prices are. Calle de Fuencarral and Calle Gran Vía are just minutes away.

4. Room007 Chueca Hostel

Despite having nothing to do with James Bond, there’s still an air of cool to this hostel in Chueca. Industrial chic design prevails throughout – from the exposed beams to the stone floors. Each bed comes with linen, a towel and a locker, plus there’s complimentary shower gel in the bathrooms. Upgrade to the shared dorm with its own balcony. Cheap breakfast is available on site, too.

5. Mucho Madrid

Right on the Gran Vía, Madrid’s main street and the southern border of Malasaña is Mucho Madrid. The hostel is a good budget choice if you’re travelling with friends; it has quadruple, triple and twin private rooms, as well as four- and three-bed dorms. Whilst there is no shared common room, there is a kitchenette where you can cook, and towels, linen and breakfast are included in the price.

6. Motion Hostel Chueca

Motion has a prime location right on Plaza Pedro Zerolo, just steps from Gran Vía and the bars, shops and nightlife of Chueca. Decor is simple, characterised by lime green walls and quirky touches like the large wooden tree in reception. Rooms range from shared dorms for up to 16 people, alongside a six-person female-only dorm and private rooms. Head to the bar to mingle with fellow guests – there is table football and ping-pong tables in there, too. Linen and breakfast are included in the price.
