Away from its built-up tourist resorts, Mallorca is an island with a rich and varied landscape of incredible natural beauty. And what better way to enjoy the stunning scenery than to rent a house for a week or two, sit back, and enjoy the views. As well as numerous villas ranging from the traditional-rustic to the uber-modern, there are plenty of restored centuries-old fincas available as holiday homes. We’ve searched the isle and picked out six of the most idyllic.

1. Son Salas, Soller

A lovingly restored 17th-century farmhouse overlooking Soller’s lush and picturesque valley, Son Salas is certainly one of the island’s finest country retreats. This beautiful stone finca and family home is the product of over 30 years of renovation and refinement, achieved with such attention to detail that you fall for the place before even setting foot on its breathtaking panoramic terrace. The house is built around a lovely shaded courtyard filled with tropical plants and stone columns, leading through to a dining room dominated by the huge original olive press. Several of its eight bedrooms feature traditional Mallorquin four-poster beds, and the bathroom off the stunning master bedroom easily rivals that of a five-star hotel. Lovely pieces of antique Spanish furniture are scattered throughout, and the rustic feel blends seamlessly with original contemporary artworks, plus every mod-con you need for a luxury villa break; there is even a cinema room if you can tear yourself away from the views. Over 50 acres of grounds brim with avocado, lemon, orange, and olive trees, while terraced gardens are filled with the scent of jasmine. A full-size pool sits just below the house and the tennis court’s spectacular mountain-side setting means you might be hard pushed to concentrate on the ball.

2. Villa Infinitum, Port d’Andratx

If your idea of a dream villa is more sleek contemporary minimalism than rustic splendour, and you’re impressed by high-tech gadgetry, then Villa Infinitum will definitely push all the right buttons. The height of luxury, this newly built five-bedroom villa has every digitally controlled fixture and fitting you can think of, including a seriously impressive sound system throughout. Not only does it have an indoor spa pool (plus gym, sauna and snooker rooms) there is also an infinity pool with views over Port d’Andratx bay, plus a plunge pool on the roof terrace, with the addition of an outdoor kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling windows make for incredible bay views, particularly from the master bedroom with its huge dressing room, and there is even underfloor heating for winter stays. High-end details can be found in every corner down to designer glassware and the villa’s own-brand organic toiletries.

3. Es Rafalet, Manacor

Es Rafalet is a converted Mallorcan finca that has managed to retain a traditional family feel and a real sense of its farming history. There are two properties (Casa Gran and Casa Petita) available to rent within the estate, each with its own terrace area and barbecue. The main house, Casa Gran, sleeps six and has been tastefully renovated with partially exposed original stonework and wooden beams. There is a simple rustic charm to the place, and whilst not luxurious, it is nicely furnished with a blend of contemporary and traditional and has everything you might need. A fantastic place for families, there is a small kids’ pool as well as the main one, and a multitude of child-friendly facilities, including indoor and outdoor play areas, loads of toys and games, and free use of bikes.

Sa Cova, Fornalutx

Located at the top of the ridiculously picturesque village of Fornalutx, and with stunning views over the rooftops to the mountains beyond, Sa Cova is certainly idyllic. A beautifully-restored finca with a superb saltwater pool and terraced gardens, it is perfectly positioned to provide rural seclusion, yet it is only a five minute walk from the village square and several dining options. Decor is elegant and minimal, the kitchen is modern and well equipped, and there are outdoor dining areas with barbecue facilities. Sleeping a total of eight, there are four double rooms – one of the rooms is in a separate casita and the main bedroom in the house is over a whole floor with en-suite bathroom.

For security reasons, only guests are provided with the hotel’s address, info@sacovafornalutx.com

5. Finca Biniforani Nou

Nestled in the mountains, yet within easy reach of Palma, various beaches, the town and port of Soller, and the pretty village of Deia, Finca Biniforani Nou is perfectly positioned for cramming as much into your holiday is possible. The nearest village is Bunyola, where you can catch the antique wooden train to Soller or into Palma. The setting isn’t too shabby either, set in a vast rural estate with terraced fields, olive groves, and the occasional wandering donkey. The house itself is large (sleeping up to 16 people), fully renovated and decorated in a combination of contemporary and traditional styling. Views from the terraces are stunning, with the shaded outdoor dining area, ping-pong table and large pool all looking out over the mountains and surrounding pine forests.
