We met with Barcelona-based artist and creator of Spritz Design, Frédérique Conte, who first began experimenting with silkscreen printing on cloth, paper and wood five years ago. While her first collection was of a series of scarves, a year ago she launched her popular line of organic cotton leggings that were showcased at this year’s Barcelona Ethical Fashion Fest. She is currently learning how to use natural pigments and plants as dyes, which is an important innovation we should be looking forward to in her future collections. Follow her work on Instagram as well as on Facebook

What advice would you give to someone who was trying to break into the business?

As with every job, if you don’t want to be bored or end up burned out, you have to find a work/life balance that suits you. It is important to focus on what matters to you, but also to listen to other people’s advice every once in a while too. Try to be satisfied with your work and what you do well, but do not forget to distinguish between what is business and what is art.

What’s next?

More XXL patterns on basic garments. Much more quality than quantity. And I also want to adapt Spritz’s prints to men’s fashion too!

How would you like to be remembered?

If you weren’t a printmaker, what would you be doing?

Lawyer by day, David Bowie by night.

How would you describe your printmaking business in 80 characters?
