The Costa del Sol, in Malaga, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, but if you’re looking for a low-key vibe, head to Nerja. This former fishing village is wedged between the dramatic foothills of the Sierra Almijara and a long stretch of coast dotted with beaches, coves and rugged cliffs. Central to its waterfront is the famous Balcón de Europa with its breathtaking views of the sea.

This family-friendly aparthotel complex is set on the picturesque Playa Playazo Rio Seco about two kilometres along the coast from Nerja town. There’s a Kids Club to keep the little ones happy, while parents can head to the spa zone to indulge in water massages and thalassotherapy treatments. Or order a cocktail from the poolside bar and kick back by the huge pool.
