When you think of Europe’s most romantic cities, Valencia is probably not the first place that springs to mind. But actually, few places are quite as romantic as this Spanish city. Not only is it full of pretty architecture, it’s also famous for flowers, music, wine and good food. If you want to whisk someone special away for the weekend, or even impress a cute fellow traveler, here are some ideas to inspire you.

Old Town

What could be more romantic than a walk through the cobbled streets of Valencia’s pretty Old Town? Step off the beaten path and duck down its winding alleys and side streets to discover tranquil little squares, cute pavement cafes, tiny churches and the crumbling remains of ancient city walls.

1. Palace of Music

If your amour is a music lover, there’s plenty to choose from in Valencia. Valencia is famous for its musical traditions and has not one but two world-class venues for classical concerts. The Palau de la Musica couldn’t be in a more romantic spot, set in lush green gardens next to a large fountain and surrounded by palm trees.

2. The Botanical Gardens

University

Immerse yourself in nature at this gorgeous green space in the city centre. With hundreds of species of palm trees, cacti and exotic herbs and flowers from around the world, this sweet-smelling paradise is one of Valencia’s most peaceful and beautiful spots and entrance is just a couple of euros.

L’Albufera lake

Just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) south of the city centre you’ll find the serene L’Albufera natural park. This area is said to be the original home of paella, and there are plenty of great restaurants to visit. But the most romantic thing to do here is to watch the sunset from one of the small fishing boats that sail out into the middle of the still, shallow waters.

The City of Arts and Sciences

These ultra-modern buildings are a must see on any trip to Valencia, but they make a great place to take a date, too. Whether you want to check out one of the many changing art exhibitions, visit the aquarium or just stroll around the gardens and take some photos, it will be unforgettable against this stunning backdrop.

Picnic in the park

If you’re looking for a peaceful green oasis, Valencia has plenty of parks and gardens. Grab a blanket and find a shady spot in the city’s huge Viveros Gardens with its colourful aviary, a small lake full of swans, and even the remains of a ruined ancient palace.

Enjoy the view

There are several viewpoints around the Old Town where you can get a panoramic view – and the perfect couple selfie. Try climbing the Cathedral’s tower, El Miguelete, or visit the medieval Torres de Quart, both stunning pieces of Valencian gothic architecture. For something less strenuous but equally beautiful, there could be no more romantic place for dinner and a drink than one of Valencia’s rooftop terrace bars, where you can watch the sun go down with a cocktail in hand.
