1. Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora Ski Resort in northwestern Slovenia is easily the most famous ski resort in the country, and it attracts a large international crowd every winter, thanks to its World Cup slalom ski competitions. It features 18 different slopes that are suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers and accessible by six chairlifts and 13 drag lifts. Advanced skiers can book a guide to go ski touring in the Upper Sava Valley. After a long day on the mountain, head to Pub Legende at the Hotel Kompas Hit Alpinea for a beer overlooking the slopes, before moving on to Vopa Pub for partying until the early hours.

2. Bled Straza

The Bled Straza Ski Resort sits just beside Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s top natural attractions. This beautiful lake freezes over during the winter months, and the small slope is perfect for beginners or families looking for a ski holiday that won’t break the bank. At only 645m (2,116ft) high, the slope at Bled Straza is a cruisy blue run with a red section for progression. Intermediate skiers may find it a little tame; it’s best for learning to ski or brushing up on your skiing and snowboarding skills. Lessons are available, and accommodation ranges from charming cabins to regal rooms in the resort. Plus, the lakeside town of Bled has many lively restaurants and bars for an après-ski drink.

4. Cerkno

The modern lift system is considered the fastest in Slovenia, and the family-friendly facilities are second to none. You’ll find the kids’ area at the top of the main gondola, with a magic carpet lift, roundabout and kindergarten and ski school. Once the kids are catered for, you are free to carve down the 18km (11mi) of pistes or try cross-country skiing on the 5km (3mi) of trails. There’s an excellent selection of green and blue runs for novice skiers, plus plenty of tree runs for advanced riders. Finish the day at the Restaurant Alpska Perla for traditional Slovenian cuisine on the sun terrace.

5. Golte

Despite being one of the smaller Slovenian ski resorts, Golte Ski Resort is often considered one of the most beautiful ski centres in Slovenia. The summit has beautiful views over the Savinjske Alps and Karavanke mountains, located just above the town of Mozirje. It has 12km (7mi) of family-friendly ski slopes and 5km (3mi) of cross-country skiing tracks. While Mozirje has ample restaurants, bars and accommodation, Golte Ski Resort’s hotel has all the ski-holiday necessities: massage and wellness centres, sauna and pool areas, and first-class rooms.

6. Vogel

Vogel Ski Resort is located right inside the Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park and one of its most beautifully unspoiled natural areas. The 18km (11mi) of slopes – reaching an altitude of 1,800m (5,906ft) – are protected from development. Freestyle skiers can head to the snow park, while adventurous travellers should try the tandem paragliding experience for an alternative view of the mountains. Stay in one of the traditional refuge huts at the top of the mountain, or the family-run Hotel Tripič, which is just 10km (6mi) from Vogel and serves up traditional dishes such as buckwheat dumplings with sour cream. Vogel is one of the best ski resorts in Slovenia, just for the magnificent panoramic views of Lake Bohinj – a reason to visit in itself.

7. Rogla

Hidden in the Pohorje Hills in northeastern Slovenia, Rogla boasts at least 100 days of skiing each winter. With 16 runs accessible by 11 drag lifts and two chairs at this resort, beginner and intermediate skiers will find plenty to satisfy their skiing needs. Try out freestyle tricks at the Rogla Fun Park, while novice skiers can take lessons at the Intersport Snowsports School. Kids will love the illuminated magic carpet lift and night sledding. Plus, the Pohorje Treetop Walk is ideal for little ones in strollers.

8. Maribor Pohorje

Right on the outskirts of the city, Maribor Pohorjeis the largest ski center in Slovenia, with an excellent combination of varied ski slopes, wellness spas and quick access to the city centre. Unlike the dramatic Julian Alps, you’ll be skiing through 42km (26mi) of pretty woodland pistes. Maribor Pohorje is famous for one of the longest night-skiing pistes in Europe, plus the Golden Fox competition (World Cup women’s alpine ski races), which draw in local crowds. Head to the Hotel Arena Wellness Center after a long day on the slopes to relax your weary muscles in the sauna.
