For serving delicious seafood, few regions deliver quite like the Algarve, and the following restaurants are among the top choices in terms of freshness, service, and ambiance. In Portugal, mixed seafood platters are among the most popular choices for parties of two or more who want to share, and the platters at the Marisqueira Sol e Mar may make your jaws drop (and maybe spark a little drooling). If you’re planning on spending time in Quarteira, make a stop in this restaurant located a block from Dom José Beach. First opened in 2000 as a snack bar, it only took a few short years and a big reputation for serving quality seafood before it went through a makeover to become the restaurant that it is today. Snack on fresh seafood like tiger shrimp and sea snails, or order a full meal like the lobster rice, but bring a partner in dining crime because some of their menu items require a minimum of two people.

Semi-remote and historic Sagres is known for its dramatic seaside cliff faces, a cool surfing community, its tie to Portugal’s maritime past, and fresh seafood. The Retiro do Pescador Restaurant is one of the favorite local choices that’s casual, comfortable, and perfect for the whole family. While it serves the traditional usual suspects like ameijoas à bulhão pato (clams in garlic-wine broth) and cataplana (Algarve’s steamed shellfish dish), simply grilled finfish is among the recommended items to try.

At the opposite side of the Algarve from Sagres, located near the border with Spain, is historic Castro Marim, home of the beachy restaurant called Pézinhos N’ Areia, which translates to “Little Feet in the Sand”. The restaurant is in fact on the Praia Verde (Green Beach) and from the floor to ceiling windows and terrace, diners can take in fantastic seaside views while eating. Located off the beaten path, it’s less likely that you’ll find crowds here (especially outside the summer months) but it’s a popular spot that visitors-in-the-know go out of their way for when visiting the Algarve.

First-time visitors looking to explore the Algarve are likely to swing by Camilo Beach, one of the more beautiful beaches in Lagos, but don’t leave without stopping in the on-site beach bar/restaurant first. Although it doesn’t solely serve fish, the fish and seafood dishes far outweigh the meat options on the menu (and the carnivores in the group may appreciate the other traditional Algarve treats like Chicken Piri-Piri).

Finally, Caniço Restaurant is easily the most romantic restaurant on this list, set on the sand between rocky cliff faces in the Praia dos Tres Irmãos (Beach of the Three Brothers). The seafood is fresh and delicious but it’s possible that the unique ambiance makes the food taste even better. Don’t forget to order wine to accompany your meal and stay into the night when the beach around the restaurant turns into a social/party zone.
