A stay at Pestana Vila Sol is all about embracing the seemingly endless facilities. There’s a spa, kids club, jogging trail and golf course, along with tennis courts and three swimming pools within the resort. There are also several dining options to enjoy at Pestana Vila Sol including Green Pines Restaurant – try the almond, carob and orange pudding. Stay in one of 189 rooms or a charming cottage in bougainvillea-clad gardens.

2. The Lake Spa Resort

The Lake Spa Resort is sandwiched between Vilamoura Marina – famous for its nightlife – and the white sands of Falesia Beach. Set in extensive grounds, there are three swimming pools (one lined with sand), a 24-hour gym and an excellent spa with Anne Semonin treatments on offer. The 192 rooms are spacious and light-filled. Dine at the Mare Nostrum Restaurant, which floats on a private lake and delivers the Algarve on a plate.

3. Dom Pedro Vilamoura

Favoured by families and golfers alike, the 266-room Dom Pedro was one of the first hotels built in Vilamoura. The owning group has five 18-hole championship golf courses in the vicinity, with both Old Course and Victoria (where the Portugal Masters is frequently played) drawing the crowds. For non-golfers, there is a basketball court in the gardens, a football pitch and a children’s playground, while the beach is a two-minute walk. Typical Portuguese dishes can be found in the buffet restaurant.

5. Hotel Parque das Laranjeiras

The tranquil Parque das Laranjeiras hotel is a 10-minute drive from the beaches of Vilamoura. This boutique hotel has five suites or family rooms and 18 double rooms with balconies, surrounded by pretty gardens inset with a swimming pool. Facilities include a bar, television room, business centre and reading area. The popular water park, Aquashow, is a few minutes’ drive away.

Housed in a beautifully renovated 19th-century building, Conii Hostel has a bright and breezy marine vibe, especially in the suites and dorms, which have bold, blue patterned tiles. There’s a shared kitchen, plus a bar where staff will lead you on an in-house exploration of the local wines and craft beers. Afterwards, conversations with fellow backpackers and budget travellers will, undoubtedly, flow nicely.

Spacious, homely and designed like private apartments, Hotel Apartamento do Golf is a favourite choice for travellers who don’t mind staying a short drive from the coast. It is also located near a few beautiful golf courses, making it perfect for anyone who wants to spend their days on the greens. There are also gardens, an outdoor pool and lounging area and a hotel restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner.

8. Dom José Beach Hotel

Steps from a private beach, Dom José is set in an excellent location where you can stay in sea-view rooms and gaze at the ocean from the restaurant hotel and bar. Located on the boardwalk, it is a 40-minute stroll from the Vilamoura Marina and a short drive from the popular Gypsy Market in Quarteira (perfect for buying unique and traditional souvenirs).

This modern and stylish 59-room hotel is located 30 minutes’ walk from the local beaches and marina, but there’s a free shuttle service to bridge the gap. It’s also a five-minute stroll to a local golf course. The neutral-toned rooms and suites are stylishly decorated, offering views over either the outdoor pool or the pine trees. If you want to enjoy the peaceful surrounds, head to the terrace tables at the tapas bar and restaurant.
