Picture of Nina Santos
Updated: 4 January 2019
While eating seafood may never be as budget-friendly as, say, Portugal’s favorite grilled chicken, there are certainly ways to cut financial corners, especially when ordering seafood in Lisbon. A budding reputation as a foodie haven is sparking more interest to visit by hungry wanderlusters and the cost is part of Lisbon’s package deal. Where should you go for tasty seafood on an equally tasty budget? Read on to find out the Culture Trip’s suggestions.

Do you have a special affection for traditional Portuguese tascas? If so, this is a nice neighborhood spot to visit. The Penalva da Graça is a cozy, narrow seafood restaurant with a bar running alongside one wall where it’s common to see locals sitting for a quick bite and, of course, a glass of beer or wine. Choose what to eat from the aquarium by the entrance or peruse the menu to see which recipes catch your eye. Off the tourist track, the Penalva da Graça is a place for singles, couples, families, and it’s always full of locals.

Is Marisqueira M worth visiting? Well, about 90% of the TripAdvisor’s 1,000+ reviews on the restaurant say yes. Located in Bairro Alto, it’s perfectly situated for a weekend dinner before hitting the bars, and the great prices will enhance the experience all around. Share the famous dish from Alentejo known as açorda de camarão (made with shrimp) for a nice €18,75 ($22.81) for 2 people or order the seafood rice for two costing €24,90 ($30.31). There is a long list of more seafood and finfish to look through too if you want something all for yourself, plus the menu includes meats for those in a group who may not care for seafood.

Populi Restaurant

Why not mix fantastic Portuguese cuisine with some Italian touches all in one meal? Find this culinary blend in Populi Restaurant located in Lisbon’s famously yellow square, Praça do Comércio. Share a few of their “sea snacks” or one of the cataplanas, but take a look at some of the other special recipes on the menu too. Although it may not be as budget-friendly as some of the other spots on this list, it does have a nice value for the experience, especially when factoring in the location and terrace seating available.

Cantinho do Bem Estar

For budget seafood in Lisbon with a traditional ambiance, there is also the Cantinho do Bem Estar, located in Bairro Alto. From the cozy size to the hearty yet simply served meals, this is a restaurant that may make you feel like you’re visiting a friend’s home rather than dining out. Like other restaurants in Lisbon, one dish can usually be shared between two people but perhaps you’ll want one all to yourself? Try to visit during the week, if possible, because this is one of those places that can fill up fast.

Baía do Peixe is budget friendly if you like seafood with a side of seafood and more seafood after that. How? It’s a seafood rodízio, meaning an all-you-can-eat style restaurant. The rodízio de peixe (meaning finfish only) costs €15,80 ($19.22) per person and the rodízio de marisco is €22,60 ($27.50) per person (but requires a minimum of two people) and includes oysters, sapateira (stuffed crab), mussels, clams, shrimp, whelk, barnacles and more. What’s the catch? There really is none except you have to eat through all the seafood presented in the first round in order to ask for more (and more). This is an ideal spot to visit with your seafood-loving partner-in-dine and is located in Campo Pequeno. *Tip: There is a second Baía do Peixe in Cascais.

Último Porto

If you like fresh grilled fish, Último Porto is the place to go, but you have to find it first. Totally off the beaten path – in fact, the path is nowhere in sight – it’s a spot that even some locals don’t know, but don’t think that you’ll be in and out. It has a dedicated clientele and the line at lunchtime is proof. Try the sardines, a must in Lisbon, or any other grilled fish and sit outside to gaze at the river while you eat.
