Toruń is one of Poland’s true gems. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site and is a splendid place to stroll through, admiring the architecture and vibe. Toruń is also the home of famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, and there are no shortage of sights relevant to his upbringing here. There is a lot to see and do, so spending at least one night is recommended – this concise list of the best hotels and hostels will help you find the most suitable place to sleep.

1. Green Hostel

For a cosy, comfortable and clean backpacker’s hostel, head to the Green Hostel in the heart of Toruń. This is a backpacker-style hostel on one of the streets in this famous UNESCO-listed World Heritage town. Occupying a townhouse and spanning four floors, the hostel offers shared dorms, as well as twin and double rooms. There is a very cosy lounge and common room area, a balcony and a kitchen. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, which is fast. The staff speak Polish and English and can help you organise your tours around the city. The main hostel is at Małe Garbary, but they also occupy other premises in the city.

Named after the man himself, Toruń’s most famous son, Nicolaus Copernicus, Hotel Kopernik is a great option located in the medieval Old Town and near to the Wisła River. The hotel has 69 rooms spanning five floors. The front desk is open 24 hours a day, and there is also free luggage storage and free daily newspapers in the lobby. There are meeting rooms for those here on business. There are complimentary toiletries and free bottled water in every room. A buffet breakfast is available daily for a surcharge. Wi-Fi is free and works in the rooms and in the lobby.

Situated actually on Nicolaus Copernicus Street (at the corner with Ducha Świętego), the Hotel Nicolaus is one of the most stylish and central options you will find. There is an elegant restaurant housed in the inner courtyard with a raised ceiling, light shining in and red brick walls. Local and international cuisine is served here. There is also a café and a bar, plus meeting rooms for business events. The room prices include the self-service buffet breakfast. Staff are multilingual, and the hotel has some designated smoking areas. All rooms have air conditioning, a mini bar and a tea and coffee maker. Toiletries and bottled water are provided for free. The Hotel Filmar is the best option for those wanting to escape the tourist hordes flocking to the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Toruń. This hotel is located on the other side of the carriageway and offers peace and relaxation. There is a spa tub, a sauna, a pool table and a bar. For those here on business, there is also lots of conference space, some meeting rooms and a computer station. Every room has air conditioning, a tea and coffee maker, a fridge and a 26-inch LCD television. Toiletries, water and Wi-Fi are all free in every room, and there is also a desk. The buffet breakfast is available for a surcharge.

6. Hotel Mercure Toruń Centrum

The Hotel Mercure is located on a prominent corner in the centre of Toruń, just across the road from the UNESCO-listed Old Town. There is a bar and lounge in the hotel, as well as a fitness centre and basketball and tennis courts. For those here on business, there is a conference centre, meeting rooms and a computer station. Free newspapers are provided in the lobby, and the staff on reception are multilingual including Polish, German and English. Another great budget hostel for the keen backpacker is the Hostel Orange. This hostel is well located in Toruń’s famous Old Town. This means it is close to all the main sights of the city as well as the best bars, cafés, restaurants and shops. The reception desk is open 24 hours a day. There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the hostel. The Hostel Orange has a modern common room with cosy seats, a kitchen and a dining area. It is a great place to mingle and meet other backpackers.
