Warsaw is emerging as one of Poland’s most vibrant cities, with hipster restaurants, cool bars and glittering skyscrapers. You can explore the Unesco-protected Old Town, try golonka (pork knuckle) and visit the Fryderyk Chopin Museum for a cultural fix – all on a budget. Here’s our guide to the top hostels in Warsaw for your next trip.

1. Safestay Warsaw

If it’s safety and comfort you crave while visiting the Polish capital, then the centrally located Safestay is ideal for you. In-room curtains and under-bed storage lockers provide you with privacy and security, while each bed also has its own personal light and power socket. The chilled-out top-floor loft is an open-plan, communal area with a bar. Here, you can mingle with your hostel mates over a Polish piwo (beer) or play a board game.

Hostel Chillout is a suitable base if you want to stay in Warsaw’s modern city centre. As its name suggests, it’s a relaxed place that makes a refreshing change from the popular, touristy Old Town area. The building itself is a renovated pre-World War II tenement house with a spacious common area and well-equipped kitchen. At Hostel Chillout, you are close to some of the city’s coolest up-and-coming bars, cafes and restaurants. The location is also ideal for visiting the Palace of Culture and Science and Łazienki Park (Royal Baths Park).

3. Patchwork Warsaw Design Hostel

Notable for its colourful, contemporary interior and international vibe, the Patchwork Warsaw Design Hostel in Warsaw is a hub for young travellers looking for a quirky place to sleep. The location is ideal if you’re here to party, as it’s surrounded by clubs, bars and restaurants (such as the Mąka i Woda pizzeria or the Niebo nightclub). Choose from a four-person mixed dorm, or separate male and female six-person dorms, plus there are twins, doubles and triples available. Enjoy breakfast in the bar, or cook up your own feast in the communal kitchen.

5. Hostel Helvetia

Operating since 2005, Hostel Helvetia is close to Nowy Świat – one of Warsaw’s most beautiful streets and part of the Royal Route that connects the Old Town and the royal residence of Wilanów. Solo travellers can choose from a range of dorms, while couples and groups can book a private room or studio with an ensuite bathroom. Make full use of the well-equipped kitchen, which is connected to the living room, where you can watch TV or browse the hostel’s library.

6. Adventura Hostel

Away from the bustle of the city centre, Adventura Hostel is located in the residential district of Saska Kępa. Each room follows a different theme – from the Oriental three-bed dorm to the Pokój Górski eight-bed dorm – and the kitchen shelves are filled with cookbooks. After a long day of sightseeing, you can relax in a backyard garden or enjoy city views from the third floor terrace. Private apartments are also available for more privacy.

7. Tatamka Hostel

Located close to Warsaw’s Fryderyk Chopin Museum and the Copernicus Science Centre, Tatamka Hostel is a great jumping-off point for the city’s cultural hotspots. Recently renovated rooms vary from neat singles with a hot pink feature wall and ensuite bathroom to three-, four-, six- and eight-person dormitories. Each shared room has large lockers for personal belongings. Enjoy complimentary tea and coffee in the communal kitchen, plus there are laundry facilities and a summer garden, complete with sun loungers and a barbecue area.
