10 of Bergen's Top Vegetarian Restaurants

Picture of Danai Christopoulou
Updated: 9 October 2017
How difficult is it to be a vegetarian in the Land of the Vikings? Lately, not as difficult as one might think: this meat-loving country is finally starting to warm up to a plant-based way of eating. Of course, some cities have more vegetarian options than others and beautiful Bergen thankfully provides quite a few. Although not strictly vegetarian, these restaurants have a lot of surprising and delicious vegetarian dishes on offer.

Have soup, will travel: the team behind this cozy café in Bergen believes in traveling, savoring all the flavors the world has to offer, but also staying healthy. Every week, they change the soup offerings to bring you anything from traditional Norwegian soups to Middle Eastern, Asian and South American flavors. They love combining fermented ingredients, herbs and superfoods from around the world with traditional Norwegian tastes; here everything is homemade, organic and seasonal. Most of the salad and soup options are vegan or vegetarian (do try the red pot, with organic tomatoes and red lentils) and you can accompany them with the Green King sandwich, with beetroot, avocado and vegan cheese. They’re also doing Yoga & Dinner Tuesdays, so if you want to join the practice you can totally enjoy a matcha cheesecake afterwards, with zero guilt.

Come for the art, stay for the vegetarian lasagna (or the other way around.) Pygmalion is an art gallery in the heart of Bergen that hosts art exhibitions and live music, which you can enjoy while munching on your lunch or dinner, by the fireplace. Healthy, ecologically sourced ingredients are de rigueur here.

Dwell is a relatively new addition to Bergen’s “green” side: this health bar, restaurant, club and yoga place opened two years ago, and has been serving healthy and thrilling tastes from all over the world ever since. Listen to live music, party, but also come back to yourself with meditation and yoga. Whichever activity you choose to engage in here, you’ll definitely find something tasty and plant-based to munch on or sip. Try the aubergine cannelloni or the seitan kebab, and definitely save some room for their raw chocolate pudding.

There are a couple Godt Brød (“good bread”) establishments in Bergen and, although this one is our favorite because of its location (very close to the Hanseatic Museum), none of them will steer you wrong. This organic bakery and café offers vegan breads and some vegan pastries—their vegan cinnamon rolls are to die for. You also have the option of adding oat milk to your beverages, so you know you’re in good hands here.

This quirky café bar serves modern cuisine and usually offers three vegan choices on a daily basis: a vegan burger (you’ll have trouble believing it’s not real meat it tastes so good), a salad, and the day special. If you happen to visit on a day when the special is the vegetargryten, just grab a chair and thank us later.

It’s true that Munken Bistro doesn’t have that many vegetarian or vegan options, but take just one bite of their quinotto (risotto with quinoa) and you’ll be very glad we decided to include this fusion ceviche restaurant on this list. Their dessert game is very strong, as well—we recommend at least trying their sorbet.

This is another case of quality over quantity. 26 North Restaurant & Social Club is inspired by Nordic cuisine, using local ingredients and produce from the fjords, and paying attention to detail (they bake their own bread, every day). Here you can enjoy one of the best vegetarian dishes in Bergen called Hibster Tartar: a vegan tartar of baked beets and fresh herbs, served with plum compote and black rice chips. Oh, and did we mention you can ask for a selection of their desserts, if you can’t decide on just one?
