The capital of Montenegro is blessed with excellent galleries that showcases Andy Warhol and Milo Milunović, accessible mountains and vibrant café culture – plus a vast array of hotels, from the quirky to the classic. Whether you’re looking for somewhere with a bathtub in your bedroom, or want to sip craft beer in the downstairs brewery, there’s an option for you here.

Looking for the largest spa in the city? You’ve found it in this smart, centrally located hotel. The wellness centre – with saunas, an indoor pool and experience showers – may be a highlight, but the hotel also has spectacular views from the only rooftop bar in town. Drink them in with a cocktail in hand, or head downstairs to Terrace Fontana for homemade cakes and casual dining. The 180 guest rooms include accessible and pet-friendly options.

Classic elegance oozes from this hotel, located at the foot of Gorica Hill. Outside, grand arches and colonnades adorn the white facade, while inside you’ll find marble floors, spiral staircases and chandeliers. The 28 rooms and suites have a similar feel, with high ceilings, plush bedding and neutral colour schemes. There’s a sophisticated restaurant, plus a spa with an indoor pool, hydromassage tubs, a sauna and a range of treatments.

Ideal for a central location yet with a quiet atmosphere, this hotel is set 20m (65ft) from the main street that closes to traffic in the evenings. Rooms have old-world charm, with terracotta-colour walls pepped up by sage-green throws and cushions. Friendly staff and traditional artwork add to the homely vibe. Travellers on a shoestring can book one of two economy rooms, which have divan beds and are smaller than the twin and queen rooms.

Positioned in a residential area, northwest of the city centre, this hotel offers affordable, unfussy accommodation with wellness facilities to boot. All rooms have ample space, with living rooms, kitchens, separate bathrooms and balconies. The largest apartment is the business apartment – it has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and even a study. If you don’t feel like cooking, a buffet breakfast is available. Wind down after a day on the go in the indoor pool and sauna at the spa, or in the fitness room.

There’s a fun, vibrant feel to this hotel with an illuminated bar, potted plants and Art Deco dressing tables. The 17 rooms – including single, double and triple options – are simply furnished and decorated with local artwork and purple or coffee-coloured throws and curtains. Downstairs, the bar is lit with mood lighting, while the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with an emphasis on traditional specialities.

You’ll be within a short walk to most of the city attractions at this four-star hotel, located on the edge of Podgorica. It offers 27 bright rooms with en-suite bathrooms, flexible breakfast options and parking. Rooms – either double or single – feature pale wood furnishings and a neutral colour palette. A breakfast buffet is available from 7am to 10am – best eaten while watching life unfold on the boulevard in front.

Like the idea of a beerhouse inside your hotel? That’s what’s on offer at this lively, German-inspired hotel-cum-pub in the heart of Podgorica. With cool, graffiti-style walls, there’s a Munich vibe to the beerhouse, which sells plenty of draft beer and hot sausages. Guest rooms – which have names like Drunk Playroom and Mums Alcoholic – are clean and contemporary, with bold, geometric prints adding to the zany feel.

The lively bar and restaurant at this hotel is a local hangout – join Friday evening revellers as they spill out onto the terrace. Inside, the low-lit restaurant has a romantic atmosphere and serves delights such as grilled veal and shrimp risotto.
