With a small coastline of just 98 km, beaches aren’t the first thing that spring to mind when thinking about Lithuania. Unlike more popular coastal destinations, this Baltic state’s seaside spots have remained relatively undiscovered. Here are five of the most beautiful beaches on Lithuania’s stretch of wild coast.

Palanga

As one of the more divisive destinations on the list, Palanga is either loved or hated. In the summer, there is no shortage of parties to attend, but those seeking some rest may be disappointed during high season. Whatever your preference, Palanga is undeniably beautiful and certainly warrants a visit. The Juros Pier, jutting out into the Baltic Sea, is certainly a highlight and features in many photographs of Palanga.

Sventoji

Sventoji is a smaller and more family-friendly resort town located about 12 km from the popular Palanga. Though pretty sleepy most of the year, Sventoji really picks up in the summertime with visitors flocking to the beach. The most popular accommodation option in Sventoji is the small wooden homes available for rent, making it easy and convenient for families to stay with children. There is also an amusement park that is popular among families.

Melnrage

Melnrage Beach is easily reached from the port city of Klaipeda’s old town via car, city bus, or a long walk. Located about 6 km from Klaipeda’s old town, it is the easiest to reach, making it popular for a quick beach excursion. Much less crowded than Palanga, Melnrage is an alternative option for a quieter beach experience.

Nida

The excellent Baltic Beach, which spans the entirety of the Curonian Spit is one of the top beaches to visit in Lithuania. The Curonian Spit is a unique, long, thin landmass that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Lithuania’s national parks. It is rich with cultural importance as a historic fishing area and has been inhabited since the prehistoric times.

One of the top fishing villages and resort areas to visit on the Curonian Spit is Nida, which is located at the Lithuanian border with Kaliningrad. Nida is one of the most expensive summer resorts and fishing villages in Lithuania. The amazing beach that stretches as far as the eye can see can be found along the Baltic Sea side of the spit and the shifting dunes are also a unique character.

Juodkrante

Also on the long, thin Curonian Spit is Juodkrante, a smaller village sharing the same beach as Nida but with a different access point. The Baltic Beach is popular among visitors in the summertime for a chilly dip into the Baltic Sea. Accommodation prices are slightly less expensive in Juodkrante and direct access is available to the Hill of Witches and excellent birdwatching.
