October is one of the best months of the year to enjoy Rome. With its mild weather, fewer tourists, and variety of events, it’s a great time to see what the city has to offer. Kick off the fall season with a host of concerts, festivals, art exhibitions and theater performances.

FESTIVAL | Soak in street art, culture & more

📅 Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st

The 7th edition of the dynamic Outdoor Festival runs during all of October at the Ex-Caserma on Via Guido Reni. In collaboration with NUfactory and the Google Cultural Insitute, this initiative promotes urban art and cultural exchanges of all kinds. The festival hosts a wide variety of events each day of the week including conferences, film screenings, artist meet-and-greets and more. Check out the program here.

CARNIVAL | Party in the streets of San Lorenzo

📅 Saturday, October 1st

For the first time, Rome is holding ‘San Lorenzo Carnival‘, a collaboration and partnership with the famed East London Notting Hill Carnival. With international dancers, presentations, projections and DJ sets that go on late into the night, it will be a lively festival that animates the alternative and socially-conscious San Lorenzo neighborhood.

FESTIVAL | Taste local wines in the Castelli Romani

📅 Sunday October 2nd

Marino, a small town in the Castelli Romani region just south of Rome, hosts its annual Sagra dell’Uva (Wine Festival) this weekend. Now in its 92nd edition, the town comes alive with traditional attire, street food and ubiquitous wine. To arrive, take the train from Roma Termini to Marino Laziale (30 minutes, €3).

THEATER | Last chance to catch Shakespeare’s sonnets

📅 Wednesday, October 5th – Sunday, October 9th

The Silvano Toti Globe Theatre inside Villa Borghese is a replica of The Globe Theatre in London with stellar performances. Catch the last show to the season, The Tempest, with performances in English. The play will start at 8:45pm Wednesday – Saturday and at 6:00pm on Sunday.

BEER | Sample Italian crafts beers

📅 Friday, October 7th – Sunday, October 9th

Enjoy craft brews at the 4th edition of the EurHop! Roma Beer Festival this weekend. The festival will host 50 Italian and international breweries and showcase over 300 beers. The event is hosted in collaboration with famed Roman pub Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa’ who helped select the beers.

CINEMA | Catch flicks (and stars) at the Roma Film Festival

📅 Thursday, October 13th – Sunday, October 23rd

The Festa del Cinema di Roma will welcome Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to meet the audience during the 11th edition of the film festival. Film screenings during the festival will include Captain Fantastic by Matt Ross, Storks by Nicholas Stoller and Doug Sweetland, and In guerra per amore by Pierfrancesco Diliberto.

CLUBBING | Get down to techno

📅 Friday, October 14th

Jeff Mills, one of the biggest American names in techno, will headline a show at Goa, a techno and house nightclub in the Ostiense neighborhood. Italian talent Neel will also play a DJ set. With a capacity for 700 people and lined with sofas for lounging, Goa is the perfect place to get down on Friday night.

VISIT | Take a peek at the American Academy

The prestigious American Academy of Rome on Gianicolo Hill houses scholars of various disciplines, a sustainable food project, and plenty of cultural events in its residence. Take a tour of the grounds and learn about the Academy during an open-day guided tour on Saturday from 3:00pm-6:00pm.

CLUBBING | Dance the night away

📅 Saturday, October 15th

Viscious, a black mirror underground club and cocktail bar, is a hopping late-night haunt beloved by the house and hipster crowd in Rome. Owl, a young Roman DJ by the name of Mirko Peschiaroli, will play electronic and techno music until the wee hours of Sunday morning.

BALLET | Dress up at the Opera House

ART | Feel the Romance in a Beautiful Cloister

Contemporary art meets amore in a new exhibit entitled LOVE, opening at Rome’s lovely Chiostro del Bramante at the end of September. It showcases different interpretations of love by esteemed contemporary artists including Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Robert Indiana and Francesco Clemente.

ARCHEOLOGY | Explore ancient underground ruins

Emperor Nero’s Domus Aurea, one of the most splendid palaces to ever exist in Rome, is undergoing major excavations and conservation works to bring it back to life. The work site is open by appointment on weekends, giving visitors a unique glimpse into the art of cultural heritage preservation and the beauty of this ancient residence dating back to 70 AD.

EXHIBITION | Relive your childhood

Barbie. The Icon, an exhibit that catalogues the cultural impact of the Barbie doll over the past 56 years, is on show at the Vittoriano museum through the end of October.

Famed English singer and musician Peter Murphy will play in Rome as part of his European tour at Teatro Quirinetta, a historic café-theater from the 1920s near the Trevi Fountain.

CULTURE | Stay up late night at the French Academy

📅 Thursday, October 27th

Villa Medici, the French Academy in Rome, hosts events every Thursday. On October 27th, it is opening its doors from 7:00pm – 2:00am for a special Notte Bianca (White Night) with various installations and performances within its building and surrounding gardens to celebrate 350 years of the Academy’s presence in Rome.

INAUGURATION | Experience the cloud of Fuksas

The development of Rome’s New Congress Center in EUR has been an ambitious and lengthy project; its interior ‘Cloud’, designed by notable Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, will be inaugurated on at the end of October. Stay up to date on information because this is a developing story.
