Trastevere, Rome’s favourite neighbourhood, is lively, fun and known for its friendly atmosphere. It’s only a quick crossing of the Tiber River from attractions like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum, and is packed with great hotels ranging from the luxurious to the arty. Whether you’re a solo traveller, romantic couple or a holidaying family, here’s our pick of the best hotels in Trastevere.

This four-star hotel, set in a 17th-century baroque convent, has a calm and peaceful atmosphere, despite the buzz of Trastevere on its doorstep. Inside, the vaulted ceilings, chequered marble floors and neutral colour schemes add to the relaxed feel, while outside, there’s a pretty courtyard for al fresco dining. There’s also a private chapel and a 17th-century fountain to transport you back in time.

With just four rooms, this bijou guesthouse is ideal if you want a quieter experience during your stay. Set inside a 19th-century building overlooking the Tiber River, it has an elegant atmosphere with contemporary touches throughout. Expect vaulted ceilings and Italian custom-crafted furnishings. There’s a touch of palatial grandeur to this hotel, which is in the midst of Trastevere. The interior design is a blend of Victorian and rococo styles, with chandeliers, high ceilings, gold details and pleated curtains in rich satin fabrics. There are three room types, but the best is the Petunia suite, which is the largest and has a chromotherapy shower, as well as access to an infrared sauna.
