Verona is a perfect place to experience the delightfully simple Italian breakfast. There’s no better reason to get out of bed in the morning than to have a shot of strong coffee with steamed milk and something sweet and buttery, like a warm croissant (called brioche in these parts) or a cream puff. But, as an international city full of crossing cultural currents, there’s plenty more options here for the curious visitor. We’ll show you where to find American-style brunch with eggs, savory sandwiches and other delicious things that are sure to make your morning.

1. Pasticceria Flego

Bakery, Cafe, Dessert Shop, Italian, Dessert, Pastries, Gluten-free

Upon entering this sleekly elegant cafe, you’ll find a long glossy counter stacked to obsessive perfection with cakes that might be the platonic ideals of themselves. It’s a fancy place in Verona’s historic center to take a luxurious cappuccino and dessert breakfast.

2. Gnam Gnam Buonissimissimo Caffeteria & Bistrot

Bistro, Cafe, Italian, Wine, Beer

Gnam Gnam is a place where you can get a quick bite to eat anytime in the day, grab something for take-away, or sit with a coffee in the afternoon. They serve up amazing pastas and sandwiches, but their breakfast is also a real treat, as their brioches and sweets are made fresh every morning in the back kitchen. And if while travelling through Italy you come down with a craving for bacon and eggs or pancakes, you won’t leave here disappointed.

3. Elk Bakery

Bakery, Cafe, American, Italian

This is an Italian joint which takes its inspiration from across the ocean. Here you’ll get a proper brunch menu the way the cafes in Soho do it: bacon, avocado toast, Eggs Benedict and yes, even bagels. They also serve all kinds of all-American baked goods like brownies, banana bread, cookies and apple pie. For homesick Yankees longing for the items from their middle-school bake sales, this might be just the place to go. Lunch and dinner offers other kinds of Americanisms, like the lobster roll.

5. Cafè La Ciacola

Bar, Cafe, Restaurant, Italian

Here’s a great little cafe for everything from your morning coffee to your after-dinner drink. Stop in for a classic of the bar counter in the Veneto: a tramezzino. Two pieces of crustless white bread stuffed with fillings like tuna, cheese, prosciutto or vegetables, and completed with a swipe of mayonnaise. If you need something to get your day started, a quick bite from La Ciacola can’t be beaten. The place also hosts lovely concerts with local musicians and has a great, friendly vibe.

6. Tosca Cafe

Bar, Bistro, Cafe, Italian

Though it’s a modern-looking cafe, it’s the ideal place to go for the classic Italian breakfast. Close to the Piazza delle Erbe, with a lovely piece of outdoor seating, Tosca is the perfect place to spend the morning. Choose a brioche and something to sip, and watch the tourists and locals pass by.

7. Pasticceria Barini

Bakery, Cafe, Pastry Shop, Italian, Pastries

The display of this pastry shop is stuffed full every morning with a decadent feast of sweets so luscious that you almost expect them to begin singing like in a Disney movie. Fresh, creamy fruit tarts and airy cream puffs will linger long in your imagination after you’ve tasted them. It’s an authentic place full of locals, where you’ll drink a shot of coffee standing elbow-to-elbow at the counter.

We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way.
