Milan’s 10 Unmissable Art and Culture Events in Summer 2014

Located in the upper part of the Italian boot, Milano, the capital city of the region of Lombardia, has been a favourite summer destination of tourists all over the world. Heart of one of the four most important fashionweeks and birthplace of great artists and leading figures in the Italian panorama, Milano offers a wide range of cultural activities each season; here is a list of the 10 best events and festivals for summer 2014.


Festival Carroponte

29 May – 11 September

The main event of Milan summer nights is back: Festival Carroponte delights its audience each year with a rich musical and theatrical programme. Beginning in May, it will last until the start of September, with a wide range of Italian and international artists who are taking the stage. From rock to rap, to pop, every kind of music there is a genre for everyone. Loredana Bertè, the queen of Italian rock, will open the event, and she will be followed by the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble and the Balkan Party of Goran Bregovich and its orchestra.

Klimt exhibition

Until 13 July

Organised in collaboration with Österreichische Galerie Belvedere and directed by Alfred Weidinger, vice-president of the Galerie and prominent expert of symbolic painting, this Klimt exhibition is not to be missed. This is the first exhibition of the great Austrian artist’s work to be held in Milano, and many of his masterpieces that are normally kept in prominent international museums will be featured, among them ‘Adame and Eve’, ‘Salomè’, ‘Sonnenblume’, and ‘Bewegtes Wasser’. The first president of the Vienna Secession movement, Gustav Klimt remains famous for his timeless paintings ‘The Kiss’ and the ‘Beethoven Frieze’, the latter of which occupies an entire room in the finalgallery of the exhibition. The showis hosted in the magnificent building of Palazzo Reale in the heart of the city centre.

Aquabike Music Festival

5 – 8 June

For the first time in its history the Aquabike World Championship will coincide with a music festival to form the Aquabike Music Festival. On the great stage of the Idroscalo world famous djs and artists will gather together with the best riders of the world, lighting up the summer nights in Milano. Four days of competition with more than 45 participants from over 17 countries worldwide will be elevated by fabulous concerts andexciting parties. A young, thrilling and lively atmosphere, watching an aquabike championship has never been so fun.

Estate al castello

10 June – 10 September

Following the success of the 2013 edition,Estate al Castello is returning this summer. It will take place in the beautiful location of Castello Sforzesco, the XIV palatial residence of the Sforza, the monarchy that for years ruled the city of Milano at the time of the Italian Renaissance. Festival events include film screenings, theatrical productions, classical and jazz concerts as well as guided tours of Castello Sforzesco. Both the square in front of Castello Sforzesco (Piazza del Cannone) and the interior spaces (Cortile delle Armi, Cortile della Rocchetta e Portico dell’Elefante) will host the initiative, and the moats of the castle will be dedicated to entertaining events for kids.

Video Sound Art Festival


The Video Sound Art association, which presents a series of year-round workshops and seminars by international experts, organises the Video Sound Art Festival each summer. Open to emerging creative talents, the aim of the Festival is to provide a platform for education around new and innovative techniques throughout the arts: live performances, motion graphics, sound design, concerts, dance and theatre merge in the most striking locations around the city, from castles to beautiful villas. The event offers a great opportunity to young artists to show their work and to introduce them into the public art consciousness.

Il ritmo delle città

30 June – 17 July

Il ritmo delle città festival is the premiere jazz event in Milan. Born in order to celebrate and create greater awareness of the sweet and melodious notes of jazz music, this is one of the most remarkable cultural initiatives in town. The programme this year is rich and various, including Italian as well as international artists such as Ray Gelato’s Rhythm and Blues Review and the Scandinavian Project. The particularity of this event is that it takes places in lesser known areas of the city in order to give festival-goers the chance to discover the most hidden part of Milano and appreciate unusual cultural spaces.

Estate Navigli

June – September

In the most alternative and coolest neighborhood of Milano, the Navigli (the ‘Canals’), every night is unforgettable, and ever more so during the summer. From June through September all the bars, clubs and restaurants are open until late, and the most exclusive and fashionable locations nearby the canals offer fancy aperitivi, exquisite meals and more casual, hearty local cuisine. A rich programme of cultural events are also available throughout the summer, with live music concerts and enlightening tours. With its young, lively and hipster atmosphere Navigli is definitely worth a visit, if only for a tasty brunch or a romantic walk near the canals.

Notturni in Villa


Organised by the association Amici della Musica, Notturni in Villa is a series of classical and jazz music concerts in patrician villas around the city, such as Villa Simonetta or Castello Sforzesco. Particulary special about this event is the combination of good music and breath-taking locations.Audiences can spend a relaxing eveninglistening to the lovely melodiesof the best Italian and international composers, while admiring the beautiful buildings and gardens all around. Presenting a mixture of iconic music and new work from young artists, this festival reached its20th anniversary in 2013, and it is one of the most pleasurable events during summer in Milano.

Summer Fashion Weeks

12 June – 19 July and 21 June – 24 June

Italian capital of fashion and home to one of the most important fashion weeks in the world, Milano never lacks in fashion events. Although the biggest events take place in spring, Milano hosts two other fashion shows, Milano Moda Main and Milano Moda Uomo (Man), which present the best of Italian pret-à-porter fashion by the most remarkable stylists of Bel Paese. This is a chance to preview the upcoming trends and to be delighted by the worldwide famous Italian style.

Milano Film Festival

4 – 14 September

In the final days of summer Milano Film Festival opens its door to a flood of people eager to discover new Italian and international artistic talents and enjoy cinema classics. With the motto ‘Moving images in public spaces’, this form of alternative cinema is presented in the streets, squares, theatres, alleys, corridors, car parks, museums, galleries, gardens, city centre and suburbs, night and day. This exciting event is open to everyone.
