A Look at Iceland's Erupting Volcanoes in 18 Instagrams

Updated: 31 August 2017
Iceland‘s most recent volcanoes have included Grímsvötn in 2011, Eyjafjallajökull in 2010, Grímsvötn in 2004 and Hekla in 2000. This incredible natural phenomenon is quite a feat to capture – here are 18 of the best Instagrams. This website organized by the geological department at the University of Iceland gives great information about where Iceland’s volcanoes are located and provide up to date information about earthquakes and possible eruption warnings. Iceland actually has 130 volcanoes in total, both active and inactive because of its location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The country basically sits in the middle of, or on top of, two tectonic plates with 30 active volcanic systems running through the island. These Instagrammers, however, managed to catch the incredible event.

Eyjafjallajökull eruption in all its glory. 🌋 Just look at how tiny the cars look compared to the lava! 🔥 📷: @idkjustlaura
