Sushi may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of dining options in Athens, but within the past decade, Japanese cuisine has been experiencing a growth in the Greek market. When your next sushi craving hits, check out this list of the top sushi places in the Greek capital.

What happens when a Greek chef falls in love with the art of making sushi, travels to Japan to become an expert and comes back to Athens to open his own sushi place? You get Sushimou, a unique restaurant with a strong Japanese aesthetic felt from the restaurant’s décor to the food – the freshest sushi expertly prepared by Chef Antonis Drakoularakos. Word of caution: book ahead of time to make sure you get a seat at the bar.

Osaka Sushi is a recent addition to Athens’ sushi dining scene. This casual, contemporary spot has minimalistic décor, with clean lines and warm wood accents. While the food is not limited to sushi and includes a variety of noodle and rice dishes, the sushi should be at the top of your must-try list.

If you think everything in Kolonaki is overpriced, think again. Nakama Casual Sushi perfectly illustrates that Kolonaki can also do sushi at a great price. A well-kept secret since its opening, this restaurant is no longer just for sushi connoisseurs. Favourite dishes include the ‘Red Dragon Namaka’ roll and the ‘Mango Twist Nakama’ roll. If you try it once, you are sure to become a regular.

In an attempt to bring tastes and flavors from their motherland to Greece, Kazuaki Shitamori (a Japanese food wholesaler) and Chef Masahide Isomoto joined forces and launched Miyabi Sushi Dining Lounge, where you can enjoy fresh sushi and sashimi, as well as salads and Japanese appetizers. The diner also has a selection of sake labels, along with other drinks. For a quick trip to Japan without breaking the bank, this restaurant is the place to try.

Located inside the Astir Palace Hotel in Vouliagmeni, on the Athens Riviera, the upscale Matsuhisa Athens is the brainchild of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and a great option for both gourmet lovers and anyone who enjoys good food. Even the most demanding customers agree that there is something unique about Chef Tony Vratsanos’ skills. Whether you head there for sushi, late-night drinks or a nightcap, you will not be disappointed.

7. Hokyo

When Tokyo invites itself to Holargos, you get Hokyo, a quaint sushi hot spot in the northern suburb. What the eatery lacks in size, it powerfully makes up for in taste and flavours. It offers not only a wide variety of sushi but also other Japanese dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients – something you will taste right away. Hokyo will also deliver to your home.
