Updated: 1 December 2016
Time flies and it’s that magical time yet again. Occurring only once every four years, the 2016 Olympic Games are fast-approaching. If you weren’t able to score some tickets and fly to Rio to watch them live (and take the opportunity to do some sightseeing or just get some vitamin D), you can still watch all the events on a big screen. Here is our round-up of the best places in Athens open during the hottest month of the year to watch the Olympic Games.

James Joyce Irish Pub

Probably one of the most famous pubs in Athens, James Joyce Irish Pub is located beneath the Acropolis and is a great spot to watch live sporting events. Open early until late, the James Joyce presents an extensive menu of ales, drinks and food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You and your paréa (or BFFs) will surely have a great time watching the events there. Just make sure to come early as the pub has a big fan base and lots of regulars.

Athens Sports Bar

The Athens Sports Bar is conveniently located near the Acropolis museum and boasts a satellite connection to global sporting events. Open daily and frequented by lots of young people thanks to the hostel next door, the bar offers a variety of snacks, beers and drinks. If you are very hungry, you could always pop next door to the Fish Café and order a more hearty meal (the burgers are to die for) while still enjoying the events, as the bar has multiple screens. We told you this bar takes sports very seriously.

The Lazy Bulldog Pub

Why not combine your Olympics viewing-party with great food or a night out afterwards? If that idea sounds appealing, head to the Lazy Bulldog Pub in the Gazi area. The Silly Wizards

Two minutes away from the Agia Paraskevi main square in northern Athens, you will feel like you’ve landed in the MacLaren’s pub doppelganger (Wait, you’ve never seen How I Met Your Mother?). A picturesque English pub with a wide selection of beers and ales, The Silly Wizards gathers a large crowd of fans and will be showing the Game’s events but in mute. So if you are a multi-tasker and can watch a game while discussing global warming and gulping down a pint of beer on the cool balcony, then you will feel right at home here.
