Maybe because of the sad and terrible news that November brought (RIP Mister Cohen), many people are looking forward to December, a month considered to be full of love and happiness. And though December is also a reminder that winter is coming, it brings plenty of amazing events to attend. From exhibitions and performances to other various events, here is what’s happening in Athens this December.


DANCE | Watch A Ballet Power Couple In A Unique Series Of Performances

📅 December 1st-3rd; 8:30 PM – 12:00 AM

Discover a real life couple performing works from Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant, and Arthur Pita. The bad boy of ballet Sergei Polunin and Russian superstar dancer Natalia Osipova meet and transport you to the contemporary dance heavens as they show off their amazing talents for three nights at the Pallas Theater.

MUSIC | Jazz It Up With Fred Wesley

📅 December 2nd-5th

The hottest jazz club in town is hosting legendary Fred Wesley for three nights. Famous for his work with Godfather of Funk James Brown and George Clinton, the trumpet player will be joined by jazz and funk band Generations. This performance is a one-of-a-kind event that will surely get you dancing.

EVENT | Get Your Geek Out At AthensCon 2016

It is that time again – AthensCon is back. The celebration of modern pop culture comes back to Athens with a rich program including a meeting with comic writers, a wrestling legend, plus the unforgettable annual Cosplay event.

ART | Go To Henrietta Vordoni’s Solo Exhibition

If you haven’t had the chance yet, drop by the Evripides Art Gallery to admire About Bliss, a solo exhibition by Greek painter-sculptor Henrietta Vordoni, Paris’ École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts alumna, known for her figurative works. Her work explores the lack of emotions, principles, and values, and reflects on the Epicurean concept of finding and experiencing the pleasures of daily life.

MUSIC | Take A Musical Dining Journey

This is your last chance to take part in a unique musical dining journey. The Camerata (Armonia Atenea – The Friends of Music Orchestra) invites you to come and hear a nine-string instrument orchestra perform inside a train wagon at the historical Railway Carriage Theater to Treno sto Rouf.

MOVIE | Grab Your Popcorn! It’s Movie Night At The French Institute

📅 December 7th at 7:30 PM

It’s movie night tonight. Watch the documentary based on the true story of American artist Samantha Montgomery. Also known as Princess Shaw, Montgomery is a singer in New Orleans who works as a nurse’s assistant in an elderly care facility while performing at local clubs. On the other side of the world, Ophir Kutiel, aka Kutiman, famous on the YouTube platform for creating videos sampling instrumental tracks, discovers her music and uses her tracks in one of his videos, which goes viral. It’s a feel-good documentary that will fill your head with music.

MUSIC | Michelle Gurevich (Chinawoman) Returns To The Fuzz Live Music Club

📅 December 9th at 8 PM – 12 AM

Michelle Gurevich, known as Chinawoman, comes back to Athens for a unique appearance at Fuzz Live Music Club. The Canadian songwriter with Russian roots just released her fourth album titled New Decadence. And though she seems to be using her real name more, she maintains her familiar musical style as well as the melodramatic vibe of her previous works.

EVENT | May The Force Be With You

Star Wars fans from Greece unite! The Athens Star Wars Day 2016 is the first meeting of Star Wars Greek fans. Visitors can come dressed up as their favorite character and get together with like-minded people and enjoy a series of events such as an exhibition, a thematic luncheon, and many other surprises.

MUSIC | Join The Johann Strauss Ensemble At The Megaro Mousikis Hall

For two nights, be transported to Vienna. Thanks to the Johann Strauss Ensemble, under the direction of Russell McGregor, the Athens Concert Hall will be filled with Viennese waltzes. The ensemble will be joined by soprano Vassiliki Karayanni for a unique show full of magic and amazement.

EVENT | Do A Good Deed And Make Someone Else Happy

The Kivotos Astegon Association invites you to join and help feed the less fortunate. Meet at Syntagma metro exit on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00 am to help feed and bring a smile, big or small, to those in need. ART | Enter The Gateway To History At The Byzantine And Christian Museum

A renowned Saint Petersburg museum lends Athens one of its permanent collections. For the first time, the State Hermitage Museum: Gateway to History will be on display until the new year at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. Together, over 80 works, including ancient artifacts, paintings, and sculptures, will be on display in the Greek capital under the aegis of the ‘Russian Year in Greece and the Greek Year in Russia’ events.

BALLET | Fall In Love With A Christmas Classic All Over Again

THEATER | Discover The Power Of Poetry And Memory

Tiago Rodriguez’s By Heart is an innovative take on learning things by heart. Watch as he teaches ten volunteers from the audience a Shakespeare’s sonnet while introducing bits of his personal story with famous writers’ tales and texts. The performance is part of the Shakespeare 400, a cultural program taking place around the world to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016.

BALLET | Celebrate Christmas At The Megaron Concert Hall With The Snow Queen

Blame it on Christmas or the beauty of this art, but December is a month of ballets and classical works. For 16 exclusive performances, the Megaro Mousikis Concert Hall welcomes the Kiev National Opera Ballet who will be performing The Snow Queen, a ballet based on the well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. MUSIC | Get Heavy With Boris At Fuzz Live Music Club

THEATER | A Performance Where Film Meets Theater At The Onassis Cultural Centre

EXHIBITION | See A Rare Sculpture At The Acropolis Museum

📅 Until March 2017

A rare artifact of the Hellenistic period will be on display for another three months, but it’s the last week of the year, so try doing something different. Take a walk on Dionysiou Aeropagitou and drop by the museum to admire the ancient bronze horseman, a unique vestige of the past caught in fishing nets off the coast of Kalymnos.
