From endless Mediterranean Sea views to crystalline swimming coves and secluded beaches, there’s a reason Greece is a top destination for newlyweds. After your wedding festivities, you’ll want time to flop – preferably in the sunshine with an ice-cold glass of wine in hand. Read on to discover the best places to book your honeymoon in Greece.

Impress your other half by hiring a yacht for the day through SamBoat. Alternatively, organise a multi-day sailing holiday for two with Dream Yacht Charter.

1. Indulge in a luxurious honeymoon in picture-perfect Santorini

The Cycladic island of Santorini regularly tops the charts when it comes to Greek honeymoon destinations. With its iconic blue-domed churches and far-reaching views across the caldera, it’s easy to see why this picturesque island makes for a romantic escape. Tuck into fresh seafood while you watch the sun dip below the horizon, before returning to your cliffside suite to sip champagne in your private hot tub.

2. Be seduced by the charm of Nafplio

Another romance-infused destination is Nafplio in the Peloponnese, reflected in the sheer number of weddings celebrated here each year. Even if you only visit for your honeymoon, the magical aura of this little town, which was the country’s first capital, will seduce you. Stroll past neoclassical mansions covered with bougainvillea and the quiet waterfront dotted with a plethora of cafés.

4. Get away from the crowds in Spetses

Only two hours away from Athens, the island of Spetses is known for its natural beauty and laid-back vibe. Stay in one of the island’s boutique hotels and while away a lazy afternoon lounging on the beach. Alternatively, spend the day sailing around the Saronic Gulf with SamBoat, before finishing the day with a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride around Spetses town harbour.

5. Discover the age-old winemaking tradition in Milos

Discover the finest Greek wine by booking a trip to Milos. Volcanic soil and mild climate create an astonishing array of wines, best sampled at the Kostantakis Winery in the northeast corner of the island. Alongside wine tasting sessions, you can explore the island’s beautiful beaches (including the lunar-esque Sarakiniko) and its picturesque little villages, as well as visit the neighbouring island of Kimolos.

6. Relax with a spa honeymoon in Amorgos

Organising a wedding can be immensely stressful. Post-nuptials, indulge in some much needed R&R on the island of Amorgos, part of the Cyclades. Book a spa hotel – like the Aegialis Hotel & Spa – with its own thalassotherapy centre that includes a sauna, hammam, steam room and seawater pool. While you’re here, splash out on a couple’s massage overlooking the gloriously blue Aegean Sea. Beyond, there are dozens of beautiful hiking trails that criss-cross the island, if you fancy stretching your legs.

7. Start married life with a road trip across Crete

Not everyone wants to relax on a sun lounger for their honeymoon. Why not take a road trip across Crete? Soak up the best that Greece has to offer on a small scale – from archaeological wonders like the Minoan palace of Knossos, to spectacular beaches, such as Elafonisi, and awe-inspiring mountaintops. Start and end your stay in Chania, taking in Rethymno, Spinalonga Island and the Matala Caves along the way.

8. Unwind by the beach in Kefalonia

Ramp up the romance with a stay on Kefalonia, just west of mainland Greece. This idyllic setting was the location for war-era love story, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Head to Assos, a quaint coastal town that forms the link between the Biga peninsula and main island, offering the glistening Ionian Sea on both sides. From here, hire bicycles and cycle along the shoreline or disappear off in search of secluded beaches without a soul in sight.

Toast married life together by hiring a boat for the day with SamBoat, or make a week of it with Dream Yacht Charter.
