Athens is a city that hardly sleeps, so unsurprisingly, you can find restaurants and tavernas open until past midnight. But for those nights where you just need to feast on a hearty meal after the clubs close, here is a selection of restaurants and food joints where you can enjoy food after hours.

1. Facce Strane

Bistro, Restaurant, Pizzeria, Italian, Greek, European, Fast Food

A little place that brings a taste of Italy to Athens, Facce Strane is an all-day restaurant that serves coffee and snacks in the morning, panini and salads for lunch and pasta in the evenings. Pop by for some late-night grub such as perfectly done tagliatelle with truffles or some mouthwatering pizza. And even if you are not a late-night eater, the lunch is equally scrumptious with tasty grilled sandwiches such as the Eolia, which includes beef, fontina cheese, mustard and caramelised onions.

2. To Karotsi tou Giatrou

Restaurant, Fast Food, Greek

To Karotsi tou Giatrou (or Doc’s Burger Bar) is a welcoming spot owned by George, aka ‘Doc’, a friendly man who sells excellent sandwiches. With a bright smile on his face, the owner is well known among locals, and his shop is a perfect spot to get a decadent sandwich on the go after a night out in Monastiraki or Psirri. Try the Subway XL, a 30-centimetre (12-inch) sandwich with fried egg, ham, cheese, bacon, pepperoni and tomato (and other toppings), and be sure to order some fries too.

3. Nonna Emotional Cooking

Cafe, Restaurant, Healthy, Vegan, Greek, Fast Food, Vegetarian

A pleasant little haven in Psirri, Nonna Emotional Cooking is a hot spot with the refreshing concept of slow cooking in mind. With a daily menu changing every day, Nonna serves dishes made with fresh ingredients, just like any grandmother (nonna means grandma in Italian) would. Even better, the menu includes vegan dishes, including a veggie burger, and fresh homemade lemonade.

5. Yiasemi

Bistro, Cafe, Mediterranean, Dessert, Greek

In picturesque Plaka, Yiasemi is an all-day café where you can find coffee and drinks as well as homemade desserts and several small dishes. The best time to visit Yiasemi is late at night when you can sit on the stairs, take in the scenic views of Plaka and simply relax, with a coffee in hand. In the winter, you will love sitting next to the fireplace, complete with a serving of rakomelo.

6. By The Glass

Wine Bar, Bistro, Restaurant, Greek, European, Wine, Beer

Located in the heart of the city, just steps away from Syntagma Square, By The Glass is a well-known wine bar with over 200 labels of local and international wines. On the food menu, delicious salads, risotto plus fish and meat dishes are available, as well as a selection of tantalising desserts. When the weather permits, find a table on the small square opposite the arcade so that you can enjoy some fresh air while enjoying everything By The Glass has to offer.

7. Warehouse

A café by day, a wine and cocktail bar by night, Warehouse is perfect for a late dinner if you are in the area. With an enticing wine and cocktail menu and some bruschetta and small food plates, you can have something to eat while enjoying some refreshing drinks in a warm and welcoming environment.

8. Hot Hot Burger Bar

Restaurant, American, Fast Food, Vegetarian, Vegan, Wine

One of the top late-night hot spots in the city, Hot Hot Burger Bar is undeniably a favourite of Athenians. It is tasty, cheap and serves original flavours, perfect for when you’ve had too much to drink. Convenient and quick, Hot Hot Burger Bar has several outposts throughout the city; therefore, party goers are sure to find one nearby.
