Just a stone’s throw from the beach and a 15-minute walk to Skyros town centre, the 27-room Perigiali Hotel is perfectly placed for exploring. Take a dip in the pool before indulging in a traditional oil pie, with fluffy dough and Skyrian cheese, for lunch. For breakfast, there’s a buffet-style feast with local thyme honey, homemade marmalade and a vast array of cured meats and cheeses.

The Nefeli Hotel in Skyros is made up of five different buildings, with a large pool at the heart of the complex. It boasts superb views of the castle, and you’re just a five-minute walk from the town centre. Choose between rooms, apartments, suites and villas, many of which come with hydromassage baths. Two suites even have their own pools. There are bikes available if you want to scoot around the island, and the restaurant serves organic food from its own farm.

The Angela Hotel in Skyros is 2km (1.2mi) outside Chora, but it benefits from peace and tranquillity. On top of this, beautiful Molos Beach, on the northeast side of the island, is only five minutes away. The hotel offers 14 double and triple rooms, all of which have their own entrance. Expect a laid-back vibe, huge pool and barbecue set up amongst the lush gardens. The seafood restaurant Psarotaverna Estiatorio O Stelios is close by – go for the lobster pasta.

6. Lykomides

Perched right on Linaria port, the Lykomides comprises two buildings overlooking the small but pretty harbour. It has 13 double and triple rooms, but families can stay in the separate Amyra apartment, which can host up to five people. At night, take a stroll around the harbour, which is lit up by atmospheric submerged lights. In the summertime, you can soak up the atmosphere and watch a play or movie in the open air or sip ouzo by the sea.
