Staying on the Greek island of Folegandros means days spent dipping in the translucent Aegean Sea and exploring bougainvillea-clad, cobbled streets, and at night you can rest your head in some of the island’s lesser-known and lovelier boutique hotels, all bookable on Culture Trip.

A ferry ride away from Athens and rising from the Aegean Sea between Paros and Santorini, Folegandros is an ideal base for island-hopping to the rest of the Cyclades islands, but a beautiful destination in its own right. Its main town (Chora) is like a mini, more understated version of Santorini’s Fira, with the same uniformly whitewashed houses built atop a craggy cliff face – and a zigzag, white path winding away from the chichi village centre and into more rural depths, to the church of Panagia above. And the island’s boutique stays are equally charming, with options for every taste and whim. Here are the best hotels in Folegandros, Greece.

Original stone buildings have been carefully renovated to form the five fully equipped apartments of the Themonies Luxury Suites. Within walking distance of the town square, this Folegandros resort was designed to be as eco-friendly as possible – from the products they use, to the buildings themselves. On a windy day, take shelter in the stylish lounge bar where you can order a steaming coffee or a cold glass of white wine, as chilled-out beats play in the background.

2. Anemi Hotel

As the only five-star hotel on Folegandros, the Anemi oozes style. One of the top reasons for booking in here is to take advantage of the Sea Sense restaurant, where you can dig into traditional giouvarlakia(balls of minced meat and rice) or the catch of the day, before sipping mojitos at the pool bar – you can always blow away the cobwebs the next morning with yoga in the vineyard. The hotel also has an on-site boutique shop selling designer clothes and accessories.

4. Vrahos Boutique Hotel

Best of all, you can walk to the centre of lively Chora, with its restaurants, tavernas and crêperie, in mere minutes.

7. Kallisti Hotel

Hotel

The Kallisti Folegandros is built in the style of a small Cycladic village but is just a minute’s walk from Chora’s main square. It has 14 rooms, all with stone beds and wooden beamed ceilings, which help add to its traditional character. There’s plenty of shade by the pool and by the pool bar, which overlooks the town and the beautiful church. And if you’re lucky, you can grab the big shaded bed on the terrace.

8. Chora Resort Hotel and Spa
