This Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea is the stopover point between Athens and Mykonos – and its famed Church of Panagia Megalochari is the most important Orthodox shrine of pilgrimage in Greece. But there’s more to Tinos than this holy site: the island is home to beautiful white-sand beaches, picturesque villages and hundreds of intricately designed 18th- and 19th-century dovecotes for housing pigeons. If you’re planning to explore this lesser-known destination, these are the very best hotels in Tinos.

1. Akti Aegeou

Resort, Budget Hotel, Serviced Apartment

Book into Akti Aegeou, a resort-style hotel, located just 30m (100ft) from the beachfront. The one- and two-bedroom studios, apartments and suites have kitchens for self-catering and sea view balconies, and there’s a pool with a pool bar for guests – go for one of the fruity summer cocktails. There’s also a restaurant that serves homemade cakes and pastries for breakfast.
