Berlin is a mecca for freelancers. Being the creative city that it is, it is not uncommon for many people to use their favourite cafés as office spaces and a place where the coffee doesn’t stop flowing. Some cafés, however, are much more open to this kind of clientele; some encourage it while others forbid laptops being used at all. If you need a day away from the home office, here’s where you’ll feel welcomed.

1. Betahaus

Cafe, Restaurant, European

Right in the heart of Kreuzberg, Betahaus is a freelancer’s dream. In fact, the café caters to laptops and roamers, with small working tables arranged next to plug points for your convenience. The lunch and coffee are always tasty, and when your food is ready you’ll be called on the loudspeaker to go and collect it from the kitchen, making a very effective system. The space is huge and warehouse-like, with high ceilings, lovely recycled wood décor and lush plant life. If you want to be a part of the community, there is also a co-working space upstairs that you can join and reap the added member benefits.

2. Nah Am Wasser

Bakery, Cafe, Restaurant, European, Vegetarian

This is a beautiful and large coffee shop in Neukölln with lots of wooden tables and ample light. There is even a bar-like swing chair for those who like a little movement while they work. This café is great because everything is self service – from ordering at the counter, to collecting your coffee and food, to clearing your plates – and the rest of the time you remain unbothered. The Wi-Fi is good, as is the music, and while the coffee is alright, they have a fantastic selection of fresh juices, baked goods and daily food specials with incredibly generous portions. Caution: you may be asked to close your laptop during the lunch rush hour between 12- 2pm.

3. St. Oberholz

Cafe, European, Coffee, Beer

Sankt Oberholz is an English-speaking co-working space for creatives and entrepreneurs. Rumoured to be the birthplace of some of Berlin’s internet startups, this café in Mitte had to open up a second space just to deal with the demand. They serve only the most hip and high-quality coffee from Bonanza Coffee Roasters, and if you’re serious about this space, you can also upgrade your experience by renting a hot desk for 15 euros a day. They also stay open really late on Fridays and Saturdays.

5. Café Kraft

Cafe, Contemporary, Coffee, Vegetarian

It’s no surprise that the hip, young professional borough of Prenzlauer Berg is teeming with worker-friendly, Wi-Fi and caffeine hotspots. Head to Café Kraft for a day of online productivity and coffee heaven. The corner café is located in a beautiful historical building and has a happy, inviting atmosphere. They also serve small snacks and sweet eats.

6. westberlin

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Contemporary, Healthy, Coffee

westberlin is a modern, sleek café right in the centre of it all, so you won’t ever feel like you’re going at it alone. Located right on the busy Friedrichstrasse, there is plenty to see when you need a break from looking at your laptop screen. The interior is stylish, creative and has a designer feel to it, with its modern furnishings and muted colour palette. The food is just as clean-looking, and there are creative magazines to read while you nosh.

We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips.
