The Most Colourful Neighbourhoods In East Berlin

Formerly grey, oppressive and monotonous, the east Berlin of today is vibrant, multicultural and full of history with new stories being created everyday via art, buildings and the eccentric people of the city. Through different textures, shades and layers of graffiti we take you on a visual adventure through some of the most colourful neighbourhoods that make up east Berlin, where a simple pop of colour can make the world of difference.

Mitte

Mitte is home to most of Berlin’s main landmarks and top tourist sites. It’s where you’ll find many of the city’s museums, Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin parliament, lots of trendy shopping outlets and the colours of Germany.

Friedrichshain

Friedrichshain is synonymous with Berlin’s punk, squater, skater and alternative scene. It’s also home to the colourful murals painted on the remnants of the Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery.

Adlershof

Adlershof in the south east of the city is where Berlin’s students of technology hang out. It used to be a former settlement, going all the way back to Büdner.

Treptower

A wonderful district in east Berlin, Treptower boasts gorgeous parks, fun on the water, the forests of Plänterwald with its beautiful dam and magical walking paths, and historical monuments.

Prenzlauer berg

This once-upon-a-time centre for bohemian artists is now packed with family-orientated parks and playgrounds and kid-friendly ice cream shops and cafés. It is also home to the festive Mauer Park flea and food market.

Marzahn

Marzahn is where to go to see seemingly never-ending blocks of concrete, Communist architecture. You can get a real taste for the old east here, but luckily artworks, colourful paint and nature add some much-needed life.
