Berlin’s Bergmannkiez, also known as the ‘other’ Kreuzberg (but don’t say that too loudly around its locals), is fully loaded with great eats and drinks. If the season is right, you can go to a nice brunch spot close to Viktoria Park, with some of the best views in Berlin, then walk around the park a few more times to work up an appetite for your next eats and sweets spot just a few footsteps away. We only recommend you do that, because the food in this part of town is just that good. After all, you can’t really get to know Berlin without getting to understand just how multicultural the city actually is, and it’s a basic fact that the best way to know a culture is through its cuisine. Take a cultural cuisine tour of some of Berlin’s best eats all in one kiez.

1. Umami

Restaurant, Thai, Vietnamese, Asian, Vegetarian, Fusion

If you’re into Vietnamese food, head over to Umami. This is a great option for both meat eaters and vegetarians, and even vegans. They have a full selection of delightful dishes and homemade drinks. Did we say full? Yes, we meant it, consider yourself fed for the next four hours plus after Umami, and consider making a reservation if your craving hits you over the weekend, since this place can get pretty packed.

2. Restaurant Z

Restaurant, Italian, Mediterranean, Greek, European

Mediterranean food is always a good option when you’re craving dishes that are rich in flavor, sauce, and visual appeal. Restaurant Z has a great wine menu, along with their friendly barman and waiters who make you feel like you’re visiting your boyfriend’s Greek family on a festive holiday. We recommend you go here for dinner, unless you’re cool with a food coma in the middle of the day – that’s up to you.

3. Madang Restaurant

Restaurant, Asian, Vegetarian, Korean

Korean food is seriously the next big thing in Berlin. Every weekend, it feels like another Korean restaurant is opening up, but this is nowhere near a bad thing. Madang Restaurant may not look chic to the simple observer, but go there for the food, not for the décor, and go there especially for the Korean BBQ. This is a great option for beef eaters, but there are also some tasty delights for the vegan and vegetarian, too.

5. Maseli Ristorante

Restaurant, Italian, Mediterranean, European

This small family-run restaurant is a nice spot if you’re into southern Italian food, but who isn’t into southern Italian food? Everyone who works in Maseli Ristorante is super friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is welcoming and warm, and the dishes are curated beauties. A nice date-night place to wine and dine.

6. REDSdeli

Restaurant, Healthy, Vegetarian

Okay, if you go to Google maps they won’t exactly include REDSdeli inside their Bergmannkiez borders, but borders are a sensitive subject in Berlin and what’s the use of a line if you can’t cross it every now and then. REDSdeli is a plateful of homemade goodness, and the owner who works there is a most friendly and interesting man. He used to be a private chef on some man’s yacht back in the day – just ask him about it while you indulge on crunchy, fluffy, saucy, fresh foccacia. The ingredients and food are healthy, so a great option if you or your traveling buddy is health-conscious.

7. Sushi Cube

Tea Room, Fast Food, Asian, Vegetarian, Vegan, Japanese

If you’re traveling on a budget, then go to Sushi Cube. They have a killer lunch special: for only 5 euros you get a more-than-reasonable amount of sushi on one long plate. There are also plenty of vegetarian options, so it’s good for the whole family. Plus the service is quite fast, which is great in case you’re in the throes of a sushi craving emergency.

8. Tutti Island

Restaurant, Fast Food, Soul Food, Vegan, Vegetarian

Another awesome budget-friendly option, just next door to the Sushi Cube, is Tutti Island. This vegetarian spot is totally delicious and will satisfy your deepest darkest desires. For only 3 euros, you can get a falafel sandwich with tasty peanut butter sauce and fresh veggies to make you feel healthy and clean. Yum, yum.
