Berlin is still one of the most affordable cities to live in Europe, especially when it comes to eating cheaply. The city is crammed with hole-in-the-wall eateries and hidden gems that serve up dishes from all over the world. Here’s where to find a great meal for under five euros.

1. Sahara Imbiss

Restaurant, Fast Food, African, Vegan, Vegetarian

The falafel to beat all falafels, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and drenched in a winning peanut sauce. This is cheap veggie and vegan fast food at its best. Choose a falafel sandwich for just €2,50 or add fried vegetables/halloumi for just a few cents more. The Sahara Teller or plate goes for a delicious €5. There are three different locations in the city, find the one closest to you and go there immediately!

2. Hamy Café

Cafe, Restaurant, Vietnamese

Every day from noon to midnight, people flock to Hamy for their delicious Vietnamese meals served in big, white bowls and never served more than about three minutes after the order is placed. Hamy is down-to earth and to the point; there are generally only two meals to choose from each day and they go for a solid €4,90. One of them usually comes with chicken and rice while the other is likely to be fish/vegetables and noodles. Perfect when you’re looking for something on the run but don’t feel like eating deep-fried fast food.

3. Mae Charoen Thai Imbiss

Restaurant, Thai

This is a super yummy Thai restaurant that you would probably miss if it weren’t for the queue of people lining up outside. Enjoy a delicious serving of traditional vegetable phad thai served with tofu for only €5. Chicken and meat dishes will cost only a tad more. There are only about two or three tables inside where you can sit, so come before the dinner rush or order take out, to be devoured in a more comfortable environment.

5. La Bolognina

Bistro, Restaurant, Italian

Eat pasta, make love is the motto of this charming little pasta restaurant in Neukölln. Their handmade, hand rolled pasta is simply mouthwatering; it’s the best freshly made pasta in town. Every Thursday they serve Gnocchi, while menu standards include Ravioli served with either butter and sage or truffle sauce, and Tagliatelle with ragu. Get an authentic bowl of Italian pasta for €6–8, bravo!

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
