Let’s face it, finding the perfect pub to be deemed your ‘local hangout’ is a very important business. In Berlin, the pub takes on many forms, from dive bar type drinking holes, to traditional pubs made for half pints, to the more sunshiny outdoor beer gardens. Looking to find a few friendly, albeit slightly tipsy faces? Here’s our list of some classic pubs dotted around the German capital.

The delicious and reasonably-priced drinks make up for this fun, kitsch yet border-line grimy and dirty-looking classic in Treptow. But isn’t that everything you want in a pub, anyway? Barbie’s Deinhoff is definitely a worthy stop on any pub crawl of Berlin, with its own unique air of queer charm and the outrageous performance piece played out every so often. While it may not be considered a classical pub in other parts of Germany, it certainly is in the context of Berlin.

Serving regional pub grub and pints of beer, Dicke Wirtin or the ‘Fat Landlady’ can be found on Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg. The wood panelled structure, outside terrace, cosy interior and knick knack covered walls make this the quintessential German pub. Expect food in generous portions, enabling you to handle more beer on tap.

It can’t get any more German than the bar service dressed in traditional German dress, the kind everybody wears to get completely delirious at beer festivals like Oktoberfest. Hofbräu prides itself on its Bavarian offerings, from its bratwurst to its beer, to the in-house band singing regional tunes.

Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus

Just a stone’s throw from the Bradenburger Tor is the unassuming Alt-Berliner. Cosy, traditional and discreet, the staff are friendly and chatty (a good opportunity to practice German with the aid of a little Dutch courage), and the food is fantastic. Try the omelette stuffed with spuds, pork, onions and cheese, and with a name like ‘Hoppel Poppel’ it’s hard to resist.

Zum Nussbaum

Tucked away in Nikolaiviertel, the oldest and most charming quarter of the city, lies Zum Nussbaum or the ‘Nut Tree.’ This teeny tiny pub only accommodates about 20 people, and besides the tasty local food and beverages, its size is its winning feature. This traditional tavern also comes with a long history, having been destroyed and then rebuilt again after WWII.

Weihenstephaner Berlin

The Weihenstephaner Berlin is a contemporary Bavarian tavern and beer garden complete with large wooden tables and traditional German cuisine. Enjoy a day out in the courtyard set in one of Mitte’s oldest buildings, right near the bustling Hackescher Markt strip. This spacious beer hall gives punters a taste of the very best speciality beer from the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan and selected regional dishes from Bavaria and Tirol.
