Berlin is fast gaining a reputation as one of the most vegetarian-friendly cities in Europe, and nowhere is this more evident than in the area around Schlesisches Tor. Gone are the days when herbivores had to settle for bread and cheese, as these brilliant Kreuzberg restaurants show.

Rootz is a top choice for tasty vegetarian lunch

1. Rootz

Rootz is a colorful, cheerful cafe situated on Skalitzer Straße. It has a laid back, casual atmosphere and a menu that’s 100% vegetarian and around 60% vegan. The fare includes bagels, burgers, wraps, salads and soups, as well as a number of specials which are posted daily on its website. There’s a changing weekly burger special including tasty treats like a chicken-style satay burger with thai ’slaw.

Friendly cafe by day, cozy restaurant by evening, Cafe V is a long-running Kreuzberg vegetarian fixture. It offers hearty and satisfying meat-free dishes; expect curries and cannelloni, schnitzel and spinach Bällchen, with a heavy reliance on seitan and tofu – veggie comfort food at its best! There’s a good range of pizza, salads and homemade cakes too, and outside seating in summer weather. Perfect for an evening meal or a spot of daytime people watching.

Yellow Sunshine

Wiener Straße 19, Berlin, Germany

Die Rebellion Des Zimtsterns: organic, seasonal and cruelty-free

3. Die Rebellion des Zimtsterns

Restaurant, Vegetarian, German, European, Vegan, Pastries

The name translates as The Rebellion of the Cinnamon Star but there’s more to this Schlesische Straße cafe than cookie cutter cuteness. The focus is on using regional, organic and seasonal produce to create a tasty selection of quiches, salad, vegan crepes, puddings and cakes by hand. The lunch specials change daily, and coffees can be made with dairy-free milks on request.

Nil

This Sudanese Imbiß is not exclusively vegetarian but does offer a wide range of mouthwatering meat-free dishes that are perfect for a cheap and speedy lunch or early evening bite. From falafel to feta, there’s something to suit all tastes, served in perfect pita or as a slightly larger plated portion. Our top pick is the tofu Madagascar; it’s vegan-friendly and, like the rest of menu, served smothered in Nil’s delicious homemade peanut sauce.

Markthalle Neun
