10 Beautiful Escapes In Berlin

Although a well-known and popular attraction in Berlin, Tiergarten is so large that finding a picturesque and quiet haven for yourself is not difficult. Several canals and little lakes garnish the lush green landscape, providing visitors with the freedom to forget any stress they may have. In the centre of the city, this enormous park is easy to find!

Among the busy streets of Neukölln is the beautiful Körnerpark, complete with fountains, flower gardens and an art gallery. These neo-baroque gardens have a regal design and provide an ideal escape from the city.

In the northern district of Lichtenberg, the Malchower See lies in the centre of a large forest. This area is truly stunning, complete with vibrant wildlife. Swimming in the lake is banned here so that the natural habitats of flora and fauna are preserved and not disturbed.

While Lustgarten is situated on Museum Island in the centre of the city, home to the main art museums and therefore a major tourist attraction, there are still areas that are more secluded where visitors can take a rest and watch the world go by. To the very left of the garden by Schlossbrücke is a beautiful area lined with trees on one side and the canal on the other. With a multitude of large, unique reclining benches, visitors can sit or lie down here with a view of the museums, the canal or the well-known bridge and its residing sculptures. It’s a relaxing location and still close to all the action of the city. On occasion, the sound of busking musicians floats over to this area too making it even more pleasant.

This is the largest lake in Berlin, which lies in the Treptow-Köpenick district in the east. You will see many bathers here, enjoying this blissful area. The Müggelturm also provides a fantastic view over the lake and neighboring forests.

This might not seem like an ideal location – a square in one of the busiest parts of the city. However, behind the main square around the back of the Französische Friedrichstadtkirche is a charming little garden. Perfectly positioned trees line up around the benches and paired with the cobbled flooring, a quaint and pretty atmosphere is created here in the shadow of the ornate church.

Situated just below Treptower Park, Plänterwald is a large forest that sits on the river and is host to the forbidden amusement park. This forest is very large and picturesque, and completely cut off from the city. It is a perfect escape and veering off the designated path you might find yourself easily lost. Additionally, there are plenty of benches to sit by the canal and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. There is an abundance of wildlife here, with many swans, geese and ducks as well as little forest animals, making this a delightful escape.

Located in a quiet area of Kreuzberg, Viktoria Park is one of the smaller parks in Berlin. Plentiful luscious trees fill the park and a rather steep hill leads up to the centre of the park. It’s a beautiful walk, especially by the dramatic rock formation and waterfall that paves the way to the Prussian National Monument for the Liberation Wars. A final reward on reaching the summit of the hill is the spectacular view over the city.

This gorgeous forest is quite possibly one of the most beautiful natural environments in Berlin. Situated in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough, the forest is fairly far out to the west and borders the river Havel. However, many people venture here to either go for a long walk or simply to sit and observe the scenery. As the forest is so huge, there are many beautiful sections to visit. The Paul-Ernst-Park is a particularly enjoyable and scenic part, with a footpath that encircles the Schlachtensee.
