Haus der Kulturen der Welt is known for offering a choice few cultural events tailored to an international audience. This weekend is no exception. Adelbert von Chamisso was a German poet and writer who famously wrote Peter Schlemihl. In this story, the main character (Peter) sells his shadow, unlike the other famous Peter who just couldn’t seem to catch up with his. Chamisso was also a botanist who was appointed to join a scientific expedition on the Russian ship Rurik. Moved by Chamisso’s descriptions, Ulrike Ottinger and Michael Oppitz wanted to create a ‘cinematic evocation’ of his work. These directors have woven the past and present into a cinematic narrative, inspired by Chamisso and other brazen scientific explorers. Their film will have English and German subtitles, and will be followed by a talk by the visionary directors. With admission at only six euros, it’s an affordable and edifying way to spend a Sunday.
