While in September, we could still hold onto some last fading hours of summer, by the time October rolls around it’s time to admit that all good things must come to an end. Luckily for us, October in Berlin is filled with plenty of fall-themed festivities that make the transition easy. Even if Halloween isn’t your thing, we can safely say that there’s something for everyone this month. Here’s what’s on in October 2016.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9th

MUSIC | Wir sind die Roboter

📅 Saturday, October 1st

From techno to industrial to ambient, Berlin has long been known for its experimental beats. Keep the groove going in October at the final day of Wir sind die Robotor, a robotic music convention hosted by the Logos Foundation and featuring an array of machine ensembles and performances at the Musikbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg.

FOOD | Berlin Food Week

📅 Saturday, October 1st – Saturday, October 8th

October also marks the commencement of the third annual Berlin Food Week. This is required eating for anyone who claims to be a foodie, as all of Berlin’s best gastronomic delights will be present, with over 50 participating restaurants. The event is intended to serve as a platform for considering the city’s food culture according to the categories of health, controversy, trendiness, quality, and both regional and international authenticity.

PHOTOGRAPHY | European Month of Photography

📅 Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st

Berlin is also known for its artistic side, and what better way to celebrate it than with the European Month of Photography? The largest photography festival in Germany, more than 120 galleries and museums will be participating in this month-long event. In unprecedented style, this year’s festival doesn’t have a theme in order to allow for greater diversity of expression, which means it will be that much more interesting to the likes of us as viewers.

THEATRE | Shadows (Eurydice Speaks)

📅 Monday, October 3rd

The story of Orpheus and Eurydice has been told many times, but none quite like legendary Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek’s use of the story as a platform for exploring gendered oppression. British film director Katie Mitchell transformed Jelinek’s takes on the story into her live video production of Eurydice’s journey, which she will be showing to audiences on the stage of the Schaubühne in Shadows (Eurydice Speaks).

FESTIVAL | Festival of Lights

📅 Friday, October 7th – Sunday, October 16th

Indeed, the festival of lights is celebrated worldwide, but Berlin partakes in the celebration in some truly special ways by transforming its many iconic buildings and monuments into backdrops for breathtaking light shows and projections by visual artists hailing from around the world. This is the perfect occasion for an evening stroll throughout the city center.

CULTURE | Dictionary of Now #4: Sharon Macdonald, Tony Bennett, with a commentary by Arjun Appadurai – THING

📅 Monday, October 10th

While on the surface, museums might seem to be mere collections of old objects whose significance belongs to eras and epochs long past, this free talk among experts at the Ethnologisches Museum gives people the chance to go meta. The group will be discussing the narratives we create through the displays cultivated at museums through carefully curated objects, begging the question of which things are worth preserving and why.

DRINK | Bar Convent Berlin

📅 Tuesday, October 11th – Wednesday, October 12th

With popular events like Braufest and Craft Beer Week, it’s hardly a secret that Berlin’s brew scene is booming. This fall, be sure to catch the Bar Convent Berlin for an insider’s chance to talk shop with the people behind these glorious operations. All of Europe’s most important brewers, bar owners, and bartenders will be in attendance.

ART | 3hd Festival 2016: Acting under Capital | Present Sense

The people behind 3hd Festival have scoured the subversive music and art scenes to find its greatest innovators to participate in two mind-bending creative installations with apocalyptic undertones, both the brainchildren of Nile Koetting. The artists will be exploring their abilities to convey messages across a diverse array of media and confronting the effects that the boundless connectivity of globalization have on the creative scene and beyond.

ART | Illustrative Festival

📅 Friday, October 14th – Sunday, October 23rd

Berlin’s 8th annual Illustrative Festival, the ‘Biennale of Illustrative and Graphic Art’ will be held across the span of nine days in the middle of the month at the historic Direktorenhaus. There will be a multitude of exhibitions displaying the works of acclaimed graphic artists and illustrators. The festival will also include showings of last year’s winners of the Young Illustrators Award.

THEATRE | Welcome to Night Vale

📅 Saturday, October 15th

The much-anticipated live showing of the acclaimed podcast Welcome to Night Vale will be going down on the third Saturday of this month at Huxleys in Neukölln. This performance will have all the quirk and drama of an auditory episode of the show, and then some. Get tickets quickly, though, as Welcome to Night Vale’s live shows tend to sell out fast.

FESTIVAL | Japanisches Oktoberfest

On October 17th, as we mourn the conclusion of the real thing, Japanisches Oktoberfest is here to pick up the pieces. This fun and creative event will take the German concept and apply it to Japanese customs and cuisine with plenty of traditional delights on offer. Who would have thought that Japanese culture would mix so well with this world-famous German festival?

FASHION | DaWanda @ Bikini Berlin

📅 Monday, October 17th

Head to Bikini Berlin for a dose of DIY fashion advice on October 17th. After all, everyone could use a bit of creative inspiration as Berlin heads into another daunting winter. Visitors will have more than 150 workshops to choose from, featuring instruction in knitting, sewing, crocheting, jewelry-making, and more at this all-night event.

MUSIC | Castle – Albez Duz at Urban Spree

While there’s still a touch of warmth in the air, let us recommend getting out and grooving at one of the city’s party venues. Urban Spree on Revaler Strasse makes doing so easy with Castle’s album release celebration. These heavy metal doom tunes provide the perfect melodies for transitioning into the Halloween spirit. Albez Duz, a band native to Berlin, will also be playing a set.

HISTORY | Tunnelwanderung ‘Innsbrucker Platz’ (Schöneberg)

Berlin is known for its many World War II bunkers and hidden tunnels where old railways once ran. While there are a few spots open to public exploration if one knows where to look, many of these places are hidden from view and enigmatic to onlookers who encounter them. Tunnelwanderung on October 20th will demystify these spaces by offering comprehensive evening tours through the secret passageways beneath Innsbruckerplatz in Schöneberg.

THEATER | Buch (5 ingredientes de la vida)

📅 Friday, October 21st

Tune in for the final performance of Buch (5 Ingredientes de la vida) on Friday, October 21st at Deutsches Theater. The five performances, spanning from the 1960s to the present, cover five successive concepts, of the ingredients to life: utopia, imagination, life and death, instinct, and for the final installation, care. The play is in German with English subtitles, written by Fritz Kater.

MUSIC | Record Store Week

PARTY | AniMaCo 2016 – Dein Stern geht auf!

CULTURE | Second Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest

Bring out your inner American at NPR’s annual pumpkin carving contest. Bring your own pumpkins, and they will provide the rest, including tools, patterns, and help, if needed. FILM | Halloween Berlin 2016 at Kino International

Back again for another year of Halloween fun, Kino International’s horror show and club night will take place on the Saturday before the holiday.
