As the seasons transition from fall to winter, there’s a lot to look forward to. Sure, most people cherish Berlin for its glorious summers, but December is the month of Christmas markets, glühwein, and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Handpicked with care, here are the top things to do in Germany’s capital this month.


CULTURE | Didier Eribon/Fearless Speech #7

📅 Thursday, December 1st

When the weather is cold, and the days are dark, get those neurons firing with this provocative talk by philosopher Didier Eribon at HAU1 in Kreuzberg. The lecture will focus specifically on the works of Michel Foucault. Through the lens of the late thinker’s famous History of Sexuality, Eribon will be grappling with the various social and political challenges of our day in the seventh edition of this series.

ART | Nasan Tur Funktionieren

📅 Thursday, December 1st – Saturday, January 28th

Blain | Southern will be hosting this unique printmaking show throughout December and January. The artist will be doing everything live so that the viewer has the exclusive ability to see every step of the printmaking and exhibiting process. Artist Nasan Tur will be hand carving images and statements into wood blocks to use for the printing.

MUSIC | Alice Phoebe Lou – Planetarium – Berlin

📅 Friday, December 2nd

Another way to embrace the lengthening nights is to get out and use them as an excuse to party even longer, which is made particularly easy with Alice Phoebe Lou’s cosmic performance at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Prenzlauer Berg. Cool beats will be combined with galactic surrounds. Be sure to get your tickets in advance.

DESIGN | Nachtflohmarkt Berlin (Winter Edition)

Berlin has many famous flea markets. Even if perusing the better known outdoor venues is rather unappealing by the time December comes around, it’s not the only place to find something to liven up your flat and just generally color up your life. The Nachtflomarkt, for instance, is indoors and will feature flowers galore.

FESTIVAL | Japanischer Weihnachtsmarkt Berlin 2016

Naturally, December is also the month of strolling through Germany’s famous Christmas markets. While doing so at least once is basically mandatory, it’s still good to switch things up a bit. At the Japanischer Weihnachtsmarkt, expect to find Japanese treats as well as festive performances in traditional styles of dance at Arena Berlin.

While shopping for flowers is a good way to spruce up an interior during the dreary winter, sometimes it’s the wardrobe that needs a pop of color or a bit of invigorating as a means of shaking those winter blues. Along with glühwein, the Handmade Design Weihnachtsmarkt will feature Christmasy craft beers, live music, home décor, crafts, and more.

Come and gather with thousands to sing Christmas carols at the Alte Försterei the night before Christmas Eve for the annual Weihnachtssingen 2016. People from a variety of cultures and nationalities, including refugees and other individuals from around the world, will be in attendance, united by the sense of peace and celebration in the air. After all, in the words of Buddy the Elf, ‘the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.’

DANCE | Heilige Magdalena – It’s Christmas.

For another take on classic Christmas festivities, try Dance & Smile’s event at the Magdalena Club. During that awkward time between Christmas and New Year’s, it can be difficult to figure out just what to do with oneself while out of work on holiday. For something a bit more tame but no less festive, try the city’s New Year’s Eve party at the Brandenburg Gate. Oh, and did we mention admission is free?

DANCE | Hippie New Year!

To close out 2016 a bit differently, try the Hippie New Year bash in Kreuzberg. Along with typical electronic music and some secret acts, expect to find psychedelic music where we can escape the winter and briefly pretend it’s still summer. Early bird tickets are already up for sale!
