Handball is a popular sport in Germany, and Europe more broadly. With its international character, Berlin is home to people hailing from around the continent looking to engage in the sports and activities they enjoy, giving the city’s handball scene a good deal of diversity. With clubs catering to people at every level of play, here are the top ones you should know.

HSG Kreuzberg

Established in 2001, HSG Kreuzberg is a handball club comprised of four different men’s teams, each playing in a different division. As a reflection of the district itself, HSG Berlin is comprised of a diverse group of people and is often considered a very inclusive place to play. In addition to the camaraderie fostered while playing the game, most members enjoy a sense of team spirit off the court as well. For example, it is common for teammates to go for a pint of beer after a training session.

HC Steglitz

At the southwestern edge of the city, Steglitz Handball Club is an association that actually offers a broad array of sporting activities, including basketball, dance, and yoga. As for the handball, it is advertised as a leisurely endeavor, for those who love the sport but cannot commit to a rigorous regimen. It isn’t even necessary to register for the teams ahead of time. Each group meets to play once a week, and there are multiple different times available, based on which team you decide to join. There are teams for youth, men, and one for women. For those looking to try out the sport or who just want to play for fun, HC Steglitz is the way to go.

Füchse Berlin

First founded in 1890, Füchse Berlin’s the most competitive handball club. This club is for people who are quite serious about the game, as it is played at the professional and semi-professional level. Indeed, Füchse Berlin is part of the Bundesliga, the highest level of play in Germany, and in the past five years, the professional team has won multiple championships. Find the club in Reinickerdorf, with teams for youth, women, and men. It is also possible to attend games as a spectator around the city.
