Essen is the ninth largest city in Germany and is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region. Essen is vibrant, young and full of things to do and see, as well as some excellent coffee shops. Here are some of the best.

Cafe Augenblick

Cafe Augenblick is small in size but run with passion and offers a more pleasant ambiance than other coffee shops in the area. Their Sunday morning breakfast is to die for, and you can choose from scrumptious homemade pancakes, cakes, or chocolate cookies, to name just a few options. If you haven’t tried a vegan chocolate cookie, you can have one for the first time at Cafe Augenblick, and you might even like it more than a regular chocolate cookie. If the weather is nice, you could sit outside and enjoy the pleasant neighborhood.

Nord

The Nord café is not your typical chain coffee shop. Aside from drinks hot and cold, Nord offers you a great menu with breakfast, pizza, burgers, cutlets, and pasta. On the first floor of the cafe you can enjoy a few games of pool, a large seating area, the bar and music. Their large beer garden is a lovely place to be during the summer months. Nord is not for every coffee lover, but it is perfect for those looking for a variety in their daily coffee-drinking habits.

Eiscafe Meffert

Eiscafe Meffert is located in the vicinity of the castle Borbeck. It is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. The café offers a hearty breakfast menu, ice cream, cakes and savory snacks. It is open all year around every day but Thursdays. If you happen to be in Essen during the summer, the cafe’s peaceful garden terrace will be the perfect place for you. They offer a rich selection of specialty coffees, hot chocolate and waffles with hot cherries.

Cafe Extrablatt

Cafe Extrablatt is one of the biggest in Essen with around 400 seats. The cafe is very close to the shops and cinemas of the city, which makes it well attended. The fact that its also close to the musical Colosseum makes it a place to go after attending a performance. Their menu offers hot and cold drinks and the typical European fast food meals, such as wraps, fajitas, pita, baked potatoes, soups, and salads.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
