Poems Under the Sun: Open Air Slams in Berlin

Picture of Sophie Fenella
Updated: 17 June 2016
When the sun finally graces Berlin with its presence, the city completely transforms. People seem happier, the streets look brighter, and everyone is searching for somewhere to enjoy the sunshine. From barbeques at Tempelhof, to day trips to the lake at Wannsee, and open air events, there are many ways to enjoy the summer sun in Berlin. Poetry lovers will be pleased to know that the city’s best loved poetry events host open air poetry slams during the summer, bringing poetry to the great outdoors.  Here’s a list of some of the best open air poetry events.

Der Beste Poetry Slam Der Welt

Perhaps the biggest, most popular, open air poetry slam event of the year will be Der Beste Poetry Slam Der Welt, which translates as The Best Poetry Slam in the World. Hosted by slam poetry veterans Wolf Hofekamp and Julian Heun, the competition brings the poetry slam champions from previous years to a stage like no other. It is the location that sets this event apart from any other open air poetry event. Taking place at the lido in Jungfernheide, the audience sits on the beach and watches as a canoe takes the poets to a wooden stage floating in the middle of the water.  As the sun sets the poets take to the mic, against a backdrop that makes quite the change from the dark beer stained walls of the regular indoor poetry event. Presenting their best rhymes, witty jokes, metaphors, similes and lyrical speech, six poets from Germany, Austria and Switzerland  will compete to win the slam. The winner will be decided on the night. With the best poets and the best location,  it is clear how this event earned its title. This poetry slam is not to be missed.

15 July 2016, 20:30 – 22:00

Strandbad Jungfernheide 60, 13629 Berlin, Germany

Wortakkord

Bought to you by the creators of Bubbleslam, one of Berlin’s most popular poetry slams, is Wortakkord. This is not an average poetry slam, at this event poets do not perform with words alone, they are joined by a group of talented musicians. One by one poets perform while a band improvises a musical score in response to their text. The band is made up of a group of international musicians, who hold the night together with ambiant rhythms, and create a beautiful soundtrack for all of the poems. It is interesting to see how some poets respond to the music; some embrace the musicality and become more lyrical, while the texts which are more narrative-based become more theatrical with the accompaniment of music. Hosted by Jessy James La Fleur, this event takes places in the courtyard of Bett, a co-working space for creatives in the lesser known area of Schöneweide. The whole event has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere: with sofas to sit on under the setting sun, a bar with affordable drinks, and a few cats running around the space, this event presents slam poetry in a new light.

Wilde Möhre Festival

Not only a poetry event, this festival hosts music, art, craft workshops, talks and a poetry slam, all in a beautiful field on the outskirts of Berlin. Built with the philosophy of creating free spaces where collectives can come together to share skills and experiences and create better social environments, Wilde Möhre is an idyllic destination for a weekend escape from the chaos of city life. Music from DJs and bands such as Job Jobse, Blasfematic and Yarah Bravo as well as art installations and talks on the political and social issues surrounding drugs, make up some of the highlights of this festival.  But of course, the main event for poetry lovers will be the Wilde Möhre Poetry Battle where a line up of international poets will fire their best words, and battle it out to win the slam. Wortakkord will also be making an appearance at the festival, and will be bringing a team of poets to perform along with their resident band.  Camping is available for those who buy a weekend ticket, but day tickets are also available.
