1. Fischmarkt

Market

The famous Fischmarkt is a true Hamburg institution. Here every Sunday morning the Reeperbahn party crowds meet early risers and sleepy tourists. The former search for one last beer to top the night, the latter hunt for bargains or seek to experience a quintessential piece of Hamburg, and everyone leaves happy. Live music and beer flow in the historic fish auction hall, loud salesmen auction off bundles of fresh fish and giant fruit baskets, while other stalls offer everything from mouthwatering breakfast to Hamburg souvenirs.

Open: Sunday from 5AM to 9.30AM (summer) or from 7AM to 9.30AM (winter).

2. Großneumarkt

Market

The Großneumarkt – the “big new market” – takes its name from the large square at the heart of Hamburg’s Neustadt district. On Wednesdays the market doubles as an open air cantina for the employees of the nearby offices thanks to its excellent international food trucks. On Saturdays the neighborhood’s residents peruse fresh produce for the upcoming week and relax with a cup of coffee and a tasty snack.

3. Isemarkt

Market, Street Food

Twice a week Europe’s largest open air market, the Isemarkt erects its stalls under the steel arches of the railway line. Between the Eppendorfer Baum and Hoheluftbrücke stations, around 200 merchants offer assorted goods. Here you can find weekly market essentials from fresh regional vegetables and fruit to exotic spices and speciality olive oils, from freshly baked bread to gourmet cheeses and meat cuts. Other stands sell hot coffee and freshly baked cakes, flowers, handmade candy and unique home decorations. The Isemarkt is a special Hamburg experience.

Open: Tuesday and Friday from 8.30AM to 2PM.

Marktzeit

The gourmet neighborhood market Marktzeit is Hamburg’s top tip for kicking off the weekend. In the cold part of the year it takes place in Fabrik – a refurbished old factory building – and moves outdoors by the Rindermarkthalle in the St. Pauli district as summer rolls around. The market offers a hip mix of foodstuffs and design pieces. Sample French baked goods accompanied by Mexican hot chocolate or Indian samosas with a local craft beer. And, once you’re done, peruse handmade clothing or recycled wood furniture and design objects made out of concrete.

5. Goldbekmarkt

In one of the most beautiful residential areas of Hamburg you’ll find an equally appealing market – the Goldbekmarkt. The market stalls line a picturesque canal, inviting shoppers to unhurriedly peruse the numerous foodstuffs and the gorgeous flowers. The market snacks are no less inviting: French tarts and warm muffins, sauerkraut straight from the barrel and, of course, the obligatory curry sausage and fries.

Open: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8.30AM to 1PM.

6. St. Pauli Nachtmarkt

Market, German, Pub Grub, Street Food

If getting up early is not your thing, stop by the iconic St. Pauli night market instead. It takes place every Wednesday right in the middle of Hamburg’s most famous party street. And it offers two things that no other weekly market in Germany has: a beer garden and live music. Of course, there’s enough space for the classic market fare of fresh vegetables and fruit, cheeses and meats, as well as gourmet specialties. Skip the coffee and opt for a beer or a glass of wine instead.

Open: Wednesday from 4PM to 10PM (from April to September until 11PM).

7. Wochenmarkt am Spritzenplatz

Market

The market at Spritzenplatz in the multicultural Ottensen district is one of the smallest but also one of the most beautiful markets of Hamburg. Wednesdays and Saturdays are special as only organic produce fills the stands. The groceries are predominantly regional, stemming from small family-run farms. As a result this market is the perfect place for sampling fruit and vegetable varieties never seen lining supermarket shelves.

Open: Wednesday from 2PM to 6.30PM, Saturday from 9.30AM to 3PM.

8. Flohschanze

Market

Next to an old slaughterhouse, right between the trendy Sternschanze and Karoviertel districts, the Flohschanze is Hamburg’s most popular flea market. The vendors are both professional and private but the rule is clear: no new items are allowed. The selection here is colorful and eclectic: vintage clothing and shoes, jewelry, old bicycles, antique furniture, used books and records, and much more. Simply browsing the stands is an adventure in itself.

9. Der.Die.Sein Markt

Market

Hamburg’s first and only weekly design market, the Der.Die.Sein Markt takes place at the Unilever headquarters in the HafenCity district. Every Saturday around 70 designers represent the best that the city’s creative scene has to offer. The diverse handlers range from fashion and accessories to photography and art, to furniture and decorative objects. The vendors change from week to week, always offering something new and unique to the visiting design lovers.

Open: Saturday from 11AM to 6PM.
